View Full Version : Whirlwind whiners, check the May issue of Aeroplane

Secudus2004, et.al., the feature aircraft of the May issue of Aeroplane magazine is supposed to be the Whirlwind. It's a British magazine, but most Barnes & Noble bookstores in the U.S. carry it as well.

There's been lots of info on this aircraft posted here in the past, but who knows, they might have something new. And it might drum up more support for its inclusion in one of Oleg's sims. I haven't followed all of the details the ultimately unsuccessful campaign to have it included in FB/AEP/PF, but do you guys think there is any chance of it getting included in Oleg's BoB or a subsequent follow-on? I guess the invasion of Poland will be the first 3rd party add-on, and Oleg has mentioned the Med, but perhaps after that could be a western Europe expansion to cover things like Rubarb and Circus missions.

Not trying to open any old wounds, but rather to let the guys in the States know about an upcoming article in a good, if hard to find, magazine.

Oh we know all about that... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif Be very sure... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Thanks anyway Blottogg, search the forum and you will find that there are three recent threads about the Whirly with scans from the Aeroplane issue...

Recent news, there was a surviving cockpit in 1968... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif Only according to what I have heard, it is no more... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif It's all I know at the present, no details.

We or third party modelllers would do this aircraft in future for BoB if will have enough data to model it as exact copy to standards we now have in BoB.....

Personally I alwasy liked how this plane is looking.

Steady now, if you remember the Westlands Archive, or more precisely their HR Dept. asked for a certain 'key' to anyone who wanted info on their Whirlwind... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif And that 'key' would amount to a sum of 800-1500... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif As soon as their HR Dept. got wind a commercial Games company would be using or should I say, be gaining from a third party modeller, the 3D Model and flight characteristics of the aforesaid 'Westland Whirlwind' they closed shop and would no longer play with us... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

After which I had to source the data from Rolls-Royce, Derby and the Hendon Museum (Which were not free, BTW) Which at a later date was stolen from me from a trusted Whirlwind Fan... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif

But, that a side I do have a couple contacts, that may still be able to get or have the info that Oleg will need... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Ha, like BlueSky said We will need to put our hands in our pockets to get the information needed to get a Whirlwind flying in Olegs BoB.

The stuff I've got would have been enough for a good model for FB, but from what we've seen of BoB so far, it's nothing like enough to make a 'exact' virtual Whirlwind for inclusion in Olegs next sim.

The AP's do not have the drawings that you would need to make a BoB standard model and the only place that does (Augusta Westlands Archive Department) will not let them go with out a large roll of the folding stuff... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

I will put up 500 now, to see and fly a Whirlwind in Olegs next sim... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

But... We need to know exactly what to procure from Westlands before their contacted... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Bluesky - You clearly need a direct line of contact with Oleg and his modelling team to work out what they need in terms of documentation, that should be the first goal to focus on here. Once we know what he needs then we can all get together and discuss how we fund getting that info. I am willing to chip into that fund although I cannot hope to match anything like the 500 offered by Archie.

Gib, do you know or at least can you ask Oleg what is acceptable€¦ http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Here some of the stuff I€ve collected. Tell me whats good and whats not€¦ http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

These according to Mr Fred Ballam (Westlands Archive Consultant) are the most accurate drawings to date. They were drawn by the Late Mike Keep, with the help of Fred€¦

Low Res Scan.

There was however a error that at the time of print was over looked€¦

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v187/Secudus/MikeKeep01.jpg

Hope that is clear€¦

I do have A.P. 1709A Vol.I. that does have various views€¦

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v187/Secudus/AircraftImages01/06.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v187/Secudus/AircraftImages01/05.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v187/Secudus/AircraftImages01/03.jpg

But I would think you would need a lot more like this for a model to be acceptable for BoB€¦

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v187/Secudus/AircraftImages01/CS-252.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v187/Secudus/AircraftImages01/CS-249.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v187/Secudus/AircraftImages01/CS255.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v187/Secudus/AircraftImages01/CS245.jpg

If this is the caliber of the drawings that are needed to get a Whirlwind into BoB, the only place I know of that keeps them is Augusta Westlands€¦ http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif And that is going to cost€¦ http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

Cockpits, I have a list somewhere of the instruments used in both the prototype and the production aircraft.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v187/Secudus/AircraftImages01/LateProdPortStarboard.jpg

There are plenty of drawings like this and the general layout is shown in the pilots notes, the best I suspect is again at Westlands, although I did managed to get this photo€¦ http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif I forget where though... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v187/Secudus/AircraftImages01/cockpitprototype.jpg

But I need a list from Oleg of just what he wants€¦ Until then I can only guess€¦

The Whirlwind is a very interesting aircraft, and it seems there is definitly enough information to model it to the quality and detail Oleg expects for BoB. The only problem is the manpower needed. I could do the model myself, but it would take almost a year! I also dont know the specifications for BoB. To be honest, I burnt so many bridges with Oleg I doubt he would take another model from me if I gave it on a silver platter.

I would however offer my help in an orginized project with other experanced modelers. I could do the external model in rather short order. The bulk of the work that would kill me is the texture mapping, texture painting, and the cockpit.

If you can find a crew to do all the texture work and cockpit, I will do what I can, but I simply dont have the time to do it all, or find the people to do the rest. Im busy with many other things at the moment.

Here is a screenshot of my latest project I just released from FS2004.

http://www.skyunlimited.net/p38_images/p38_12.jpg

That took me a little under a year, and has about the detail that I have seen in BoB. Just to give you an idea.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding being a little newer to the forum, but it doesn't appear to me it was meant that the modeling had to be done by you guys. It looks like Oleg only needed the proper data to do it or have someone do it. I'm sure the chances of it's inclusion would go up if a completed model was presented, but it may not be necessary. Isn't there data other then a 3D drawing that will be needed for FM and such?

Now its time to wait. I spoke with a few other modelers who are doing stuff for BoB add-on's and there are no devined guidelines for modeling YET. Its too early. There are general rules, but nothing is set yet simply because this early in development things can change drasticly.

I also cant start anything soon since my plate is full with a few other projects. I dont want to double book http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I think we have a bit of time for BoB, so no worries.

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif Oddly enough, it's one of the few airfix WWII 'planes I never did make...keep meaning to get one, but fear my modelling skills wouldn't do the old bird justice, especially when displayed amongst my Corgi collection...

Here you go, a R/C Whirlwind, http://www.rcwarbirds.com/charlieshornetpage.htm

Charlie Evans from Leesburg Georgia displays his highly modified American Eagle De Havilland Hornet. 40lbs, 108" wing, 84" fiberglass fuselage, 3/4 oz. glass covered foam wings/tail feathers. Painted with Krylon paints. Robart retracts and wheels. ZDZ 60's gas engines with Dave Brown custom made spinners and Zinger custom made 20/8 4 blade props (only props flown with so far). Futaba PCM, gyro on rudder.

btw, take a look at the main page as well, http://www.rcwarbirds.com/index.htm

I'd like to contribute to this effort if I can.

Would someone with some knowledge of what's going on internally with this project please PM me. I have some resources which may be useful to the project.

Thanks.

Bump for Archie -

Love the sig, MrMoonlight - any objections if we adopt it officially?

Not at all, mate...glad you like it. Every fellow Whirly-whiner is welcome to pull it down and copy over it anytime he likes!
(Gee, looks I've contributed something to the effort already http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif)

Have anyone been able to access AVIA 18/691 in the P.R.O./National Archives? Subject is "Whirlwind aircraft: performance and handling trials".

The files I've seen for the Mossie tend to have speed and climb information, along with supporting narrative.

"Whirlwind aircraft: performance and handling trials".

That sounds like a paper Oleg could put into some decent use!

I found the document Mhuxt mentioned (no 3 on the list, using Archie€s criteria). The archive can send you a hard copy or a PDF, but I'm not sure they'll send it to non-UK citizens. Have any of you guys of the British persuasion gotten hold of the document, or should I order a copy?

It cost 10 for an estimate... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif (Which you get knocked off if you place an order) And 8.50 for 10 pages. I've asked for a digital copy, (JPG) which I can either download from the site of have sent by post on either a CD or DVD... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I've no idea how long the document is, so it might be wise if I sit down before I open the email... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Should ve perhaps make a small "Whirlwind winers"-page to go with Mr. Moonlights sig-picture? Appart from pictures, I was thinking a list of what we have collected so far, so that we all can have an eye open for things we don't have.

We had our own Official Whirlwind Whiners Thread once - I think a mod locked it because he thought I was indulging in a bit of thread necromancy. Granted, it had been a while since someone had posted, but there was a fair bit of information there...

http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/23110283/m.../r/54610583#54610583 (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/23110283/m/54610583/r/54610583#54610583)

I was just plain old Low_Flyer then...where does the time go?

A small site is perhaps a bit more permanent than a thread. There's a lot of very usefull picks and information on that thread.

Now I'm an official whiner too! Thanks to Mr. Moonlight for letting me use his stamp.

Do yourselves a favour and limit the search wind to Whirlwind only - gets you to the wheat with a lot less chaff.
