The best advice is to practice. Then practice. Then practice some more. I was really bad when I first started too, but now I can hit planes even at sever deflection angles (sometimes).

One thing you might try is recording your tracks. Set up a quick mission against one enemy plane (some people recommend a friendly bomber a they won't fight back or try to evade you).

Make one pass at him and take a shot. End the mission reardless of what happens and save the track. Play the track and watch it from your plane and then your target's view (control F2). Move the view around by moving the mouse. Slow the playback down if you need to. You will get a good idea of which shots are hitting and which ones are missing.

Keep in mind that this is NOT an arcade game. Lining up the target in the gunsight does not guarantee a hit. If you have realistic gunnery on (and you should), distance to target, conversion distance settings on your guns, angle between you and target, gravity, etc. all have an effect. The closer you are, the better your chances of hitting the target.

Relax. I still find myself jerking the whole joystick occassionally when I fire. This will always ruin your shot. Like firing a real gun, slowly and gently squeeze the trigger.

You WILL improve with practice.

Good luck and good hunting.

I think I will post my Gunnery School mission. You may enjoy it its pure fun and (hopefully) great for the FB Newbie.

Look, think about how old a person has to be before learning how to kick a baby in one smooth artistic motion. Have patients. Your skill will come. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Simplest way is to set up a variety of 'quicks' with various planes set to rookie, with no ammo, get yourself some unlimited ammo, and go a'shoot'n.

In the config.ini file, located in the FB root folder, change 'Arcade=0' to 'Arcade=1'. You will be able to see your hits better.

And yes, as mentioned, practice, practice, practice.

You may want to learn about sigs, too.

A quick tip: Instead of quickly trying to align your gunsight into position by a sharp movement of the joystick, if it's possible, just try to set the position so the crosshair will go over the target as you continue to move on (and i'm talking about on the six of a target that is going straight). After you get the hang of friendly bombers, then try a friendly fighter (which is much smaller but they still don't attack back at you). After you get the hang of that, try enemy fighter. And when I say "getting the hang of" I mean you can do it every single time you try - so don't just kill your enemy (or friendly) once and go "w00t I got him i'm a pro now", because you're not. Like the first guy said - practice, then practice some more.

Hi Guys /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif This advices helped me too. At firs I even didn't know how to stay alive 25 sec after take off... Now I'm able to evade some of my enemies ,6 or 7 times on 10 attempts), and can also stick to the "six" of some of them and follow their movements (also 6 or 7 times on 10 attempts). But here my problem begins: I'm the worst shooter of the whole community !! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif . I get to unload my ammo on my target with some hits but can't shoot him down...
whilst some of my anemies aim so well that after a few shots I'm out of a wing or flying with half of my plane...

So I'll try what you suggest here, and have one more question: how do I make the closest possible turn fight on a La-5? I like very much this plane.. It climbs well, has good maneuvrability on diving, but turns very slow... even reducing speed and dropping combat flaps (which usually leaveme without the needed energy to escape if i have a good turner on my six) /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif can any one please PLEASE help me?

Thank You and Regards.

I'm a bit of a n00b myself, but i recently found sumthing out bout shooting. cause the guns are below ur gunsight, firing slightly upwards, u actually have to aim slightly UNDER ur target if ur as close as u should be when firing. NB This obviously applies to realistic gunnery only.

Try it!
