Big fan of Robert Johnson's P47 Thunderbolt! book as well as a few others.

Melvyn Paisley (Ace!) - another good autobiography- - more of a ground pounder than Johnson, but still had 9 airkills. Good read as he talks of using bombs to overturn tanks http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Looking forward to the p51 as well!

I can't believe nobody has tried to mess up this thread. I am tempted because I tease the Jug more than anything else.

But I have respect for the P-47, it was a good plane. It's the only plane that could ask my FW-190 to step outside and give it a run. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I'm from just outside Atlantic City, and I like the Razorback better, so I'll put this one up out of respect.

"With over 210 bullet holes in his P-47 Thunderbolt, and various personal wounds, pilot Bob Johnson is seen limping back to base after a confrontation with sixteen FW-190's. During this lonely and sobering trip he encountered another FW-190 who kindly escorted him to the English Channel, but not before he emptied every one of his 7.9 mm rounds into Johnson's plane!

Just to let u know the 353rd FighterGroup has the honor of having an actual WWII p47 and p51 pilot in our ranks. Our own Honorable Col.Monroe Q. Williams.http://353rd-fightergroup.com/VGPilots/MQ1.jpg

If you happen to see him in the lobby(as he didnt care for russian and german planes he didnt get the game) say hello. He still flys Janes WWII Fighters. Hopefully with the Pony coming soon he'll get back in the FB Air with us.

Nothing wrong with the F4. It's a good dogfighter. I'm just more interested in bombing stuff now, and with a plane that can get me home. The P-47 fills that spot perfect.

Besides, after the patch, and I decide to get serious. I'm going to look for a squad to call home. It sure won't be a German/Russian squad../i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Sounds good Buzz, I can definitely respect that. I've always liked the fighter/bombers and survivability is big in my book. I don't care about points, I wanna blow things up, maybe help someone out, and occasionally bag a fighter or bomber/attack plane and get home to tell about it. I think the 47 fits you, you should stick with it. When the Tempest or Spitfire is released then I'll join an RAF squad, right now all they have is the Hurricane. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif In the meantime I don't know what I'll do, I would like to join a squad after the patch also, but I don't want to leave one when new planes become available. I guess when I am ready I'll do more research on it.

A Jug squad would be cool, and in that plane team tactics are a must. I don't like the looks of one P-47, but a pack of them can be pretty intimidating. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Sure it doesn't have any cannons but eight .50 calibre machine guns should make up for that.

It reminds me of the movie "Elephant Man" when they put him on stage to be laughed at. How cruel. Come on now, look at Top Guns 5th picture and tell me the P-47 looks good. It looks like a bloated Macy's Day Parade balloon, all that is missing are the support cables and the people running around underneath.

LOL, "Juggy McFatt." /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Just as a note I am only having fun here, I have alot of respect for the P-47. I said this earlier in the thread but it bears repeating. But Buzz, the FW-190 didn't lose the war, Germany and its ignorant leaders did. The Focke Wulf was just a machine, and Germany continues to be a leader in making "machines" even today. I don't have any respect for the Nazi regime, but as an instrument of war the 190 was outstanding. There are two reasons I like flying for the Luftwaffe:

1. The FW-190
2. It is so much better to fight against P-51's, P-47's, Yak's, La's, B-17's, P-39's, Spitfires, etc. than to constantly fight against 109's and FW-190's.

It's a picture by George Rarey, who was a cartoon artist before WW2. When America entered the war, he became a P-47 pilot, and painted all of the nose art for his squadron's planes. He was killed by Trip A fire over France.

Anyone who cares to do the research will also discover that most 190's were tasked with destroying bombers, hence escorts were free to attack them with a much reduced chance of losses in return.

And how many aircraft did p47's shoot down? I think it was about half as many as JG54.

Buzz, I think there is some confusion here. Your first comment about the P-47 being great because it was American I took as a joke. But then you said "this is a P-47 thread, if your not a fan then move on." This I didn't take as a joke. None of my comments were serious before then.

I think you know by now that I can rag on myself as much as anyone. I even provoked/encouraged others to make fun of me and the FW, and laughed when people did so. Unless the "move on" comment wasn't directed at me, I'm confused. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

I can honestly say that this is the first, and probably the last time I have ever been called Focke Wulf boy. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif For some reason FW boy makes me think of this:

http://histclo.hispeed.com/image/the/tv/us/wolfies.jpg

Nice, this painting matches my favorite skin. The inscription on the side reads "tough guy 7":

And I don't think that plane was shot down, I just think it collapsed under the weight of all the FW's armor and cannons. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif The IL-2 is like a flying tank, the FW-190 is like a flying Battleship. Maybe in 190 campaigns you should be promoted to admiral.

Hi guys!
Seeing as there is a Fan group for P47s, I was researching Historical References on the Web for WW II in the South Pacific.
The reason was to begin planning future Multiplayer Online Coops from the Empire of the Sun Website.

Bearing in Mind that Gibbage is going to make the PBY Flyable as well, I have got an absolutley ripper mission in mind for you P47 lovers.

This Mission took place in 1944 in the Vicinity of New Guinea in the South Pacific, to the North around the New Britain New Ireland Island group.

A PBY Black Cat was circling a Battle area where B25s where attacking a Japanese Air Base, the Black Cat was there to pick up any downed USA Air crews.

By the end of the day this Black Cat landed on 4 occasions in heavy seas under fire from Japanese land forces to pick up downed B-25 crews.

Of the crew of this Black Cat PBY, the entire crew of the Black Cat was awarded the Silver star, the pilot was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

But the best part is his fighter escort out bound to the area was four P47 fighters.

I am sure we will find plenty for you to do in this Mission, however be prepared for the possibility of encountering Zeros.

Thats all I would say for now about the Mission, as I am waiting for the Aircraft Add on to arrive in FB before building this one.

S! all

Heh funny thread.

I'll jump in for the p-47 too. As long as it's in the sky and not squating on runway.

Or a razorback. Ugh! Now that variant is 'orrible imo.

But seriously if I was a real pilot back then- and not a sim pilot/internet dork- the jug would be a plane I would definately love. Getting a pilot home is a real loveable quality in an airplane I would imagine. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Krunchie, I agree 100% about the survival thing, that is why I fly the Battleship 190...I mean Focke-Wulf 190. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif To me it has the most survivablity of any plane in FB and in real life. That is why it is my favorite. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif It is fast, tough, excellent in a dive, and its incredible roll rate lets it split-s, dive away, and escape very quickly. Its high speed ensures its escape most of the time also.

I think P-47 and La-5/7 are a close second, and I have great respect for both planes. But the 190 has better firepower and a superior roll-rate than both. It is tougher than the La-5/7, and is as tough as the Thunderbolt. The 190 is also much faster than the P-47 at low altitudes and is similar to the La-5/7. Still, all 3 planes are great choices IMHO.

They would never restore a FW-190 out of fear that it would fall into the wrong hands and the world would once again be an unsafe place. Imagine a Mistel falling on the White-House?

And Viper, those pictures are obviously fake. Those pics have "computer genereted" written all over them. Notice how they say "FW-190" all over them? Its like the whole "Baby milk factory" thing in Iraq all over again. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

uh its getting ridiculous /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif P-47 whiners vs wurger-whiners.. although I must confess, that I belong to w√ľrherwhiners /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif last night I tried P-47s from long time, and I must say it is the best Boom&zoom-plane.. I had some great success downing enemys below.. Great armament (against 109s, they are torn apart so easily), ability to take damage, good visibility.. Though it was much harder to down those Super-yaks with .50calls than any LW-planes .. funny /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

After the patch FW-190 and P-47 are probably very superb.. though Imho P-47 has the edge in FB, because it does not suffer from the cramped gunsight view.. it really torns away FW-190's effectiviness, when you can't see what you are shooting...

P-47 was a great plane..

Peace out!
