Very nice, and about 20,000,000 poly's each. Maybe in 5 years our computers will be able to handle that in real time.

At the start of WW2 the German army lacked experienced anti-aircraft gunners. The average gunner was so bad that the USSR decided to help them out. They did it by forcing some of their pilots to fly I-153 flak magnets. These planes were slow but very sturdy. This allowed German anti-aircraft gunners to get a large amount of target practice on a relatively small number of planes. Thanks to the Soviets help, by the end of the war the German anti-aircraft gunners were amoung the best in the world.</center>

Agree, too many polys for current home computers to run in real time without even taking into account physics in the Flight Models and damage modeling! I agree that in about 5 years or a bit less we will see this come true in our homes!

Who mans the front 4 50 cals? The bombadier? I imagine the lower 2 foward facing .50 have their own gunner, but it looks like a bombadeir is supposed to run to the other two that face 2 and 10 oclocks.

Hmm... How DO you aim the chin turret?

XyZspineZyX
09-02-2003, 03:59 AM
I've sat in a B-17G and I don't have a clue as to how they were aimed. But I do know who manned them. The bombardier and navigator manned all the nose guns. Who took which gun usually depended on who was busiest. On the bomb run the navigator would have them all. But other than that the bombardier took the chin turret.

The navigator operated the cheek guns.

The chin turret was controlled by the bombadier from his seat using a yoke that was swung away to the side when the bombsight was in use.

Most of the planes in FB really do look great. We all know that the artists that have worked on these planes are limited by poly counts. Hat's off to you IL2 modelers.

I think the next big hurtle to overcome is the modeling of large circles, such as the cowling around a radial engine. As of right now, we have to live with polygons standing in for rounded shapes. (Does make me wonder how they pull off the nice gunsights......)

Outstanding B17G, btw.

Don't forget they're going to need a Radeon 565000 Pro card to play it with max detail.

Extrapolating from current trends the 56500 Pro will cost more than the entire GDP of Holland and will have a cooling fan like the wind machines used on movie sets.

Hi all! I'm Songbirdhttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I received the email from Nikolai just now and then come here. Thank you for your comments about my B-17! At first I have to say that I'm not a Japanese people, I come from Chinahttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

This plane was modelled in Rhino3D and then rendered in Cinema4D, not 3DS MAX. Before I did this work I was not interested in bomber, I like fighter. I did it only because a magzine asked me to draw some illustrations for then. But, when I had collected many B-17G action photos, I found I began to love this big stuffhttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The first thing that occurs to me is that modern movie making uses special effects, many of them computer generated.

Why not have computer-generated B-17's, Tiger Tanks, and whatever you can think of, to make movies about WW II?

It seems like you could have any airplanes or armor you want appear in the movie. Just have a talented 3D modeler come up with with desired objects.

It's a bit hard these days to find a flying FW190A8, for example, or a working Tiger tank.

And how about a movie about WW II air combat? One that isn't a soap opera, but a serious treatment of tactics, or historic events?

Just rambling...

I have this wonderful scene on my 55" HDTV desk top too. It is truly a work of art.

I have no critizism of the model at all, but would like to clarify some thoughts mentioned early in this thread. It was rare that a B-17G would have made use of both cheek guns. Weight was a consideration, but the limited space for another ammo feed box and mounted gun in such a limited space was too much of a hassle. You could easily bang your head into them. Most (but by no means all) planes used the left cheek, since that is next to where the Navigator sat at his little table and he was closer to it. The bombardier "usually" manned the twin fifties. On occasion, ground personnel went along on missions to get flight time. They would usually be stuffed in the nose with the navigator and bombardier and would make themselves useful by manning the cheek gun.

The cheek guns were more a scare tactic than useful defensive station, since the poor pivot field and limited visibility made them pretty useless, except to keep enemy a/c from getting too bold.

Wonderful stuff, Songbird!

I might be wrong but I do believe that ATI's Trueform technology takes care of making those 8 sided poligons look round without increasing the poligon count of the objects. Only it's not implemented in FB, unfortunately.

Does anyone know whether the FB B-17 is going to have the radio operators gun? Is an upward pointing 50 cal and he has a skylight to see through. Those of you who have seen memphis belle will know what I mean. Danny the radioman is using it. I dont know if the b17 g's used it but the f's certainly did. F's that were converted to g's probably still had it there. BTW what model is FBs B17? I see the zero as well - are they making a pacific theatre add on?

In the last pic, shouldn't Princess Pat be called "The Flying Dutchman"? She certainly appears to be a ghost ship.

In other news: I love the model Songbird. Top stuff.
