It looks pretty cool,
they made this wersion because all the
Mikulin AM35 engines were neded for the
produktion of IL2s

A small amount of these fighters were
operational during the war.

Some info:

single engine fighter

Engine: one 1.600hp Ash-82A radial engine
(500hp/ton)

Span:10,30m

Length:7,90m

Weight: loaded 3.200kg

Top speed: 650km/h at 7.800m
595km/h at sea level

Climb: 1.200m/min

Arnament: four 7,92mm ShKAS
(sometimes + two 12,7mm Beresin BS)
+ six rockets

I dont know how many Mig-5s they prodused.
and I havent heard any mutch about them,
I know it performed mutch better low down than
the other mig-3s did.

so if you have any good info on it,
please show us /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

here is link with a pic of it,
can someone please help me with
moving it here.

fjuff79, This may explain why?

Like most other Soviet fighters the MiG-3 was modified for a M-82A radial engine. The first attempt, the I-210, was a hasty lash-up and performed poorly. Mikoyan and Gurevich tried again with a total redesign of the fuselage on the I-211. The prototype flew in December 1942 and proved to be able to out perform all contemporary Soviet fighters with a top speed of 670 kph at 7000 meters (416 mph at 23,000 ft.). As usual production was out of the question lest it interrupt the steady flow of Lavochkins and Yaks, but elements of the design were passed to Lavochkin for use in the La-5FN. http://www.geocities.com/Sturmvogel_66/mig.html

The twin engine escort fighter MIG~5 (as pictured in above post) was single seater. Various engines, weapons including 2 FAB500 or torpedo for multi~role. First flown August 1941. But Pe~2 fullfiled escort need, so... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

The poster may have been thinking single engine I~211 with one M~82 conversion of single engine Mig~3. Ten production aircraft made early 1942.

I~210 was earlier rush job engine conversion with severe problems, not to mention very poor performance (like 560km/hr and ceiling 9km). /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

** I~211 much better installation of M~82. Looked like La~5. Redesigned main gears, retractable tailwheel, blah blah...Wonderful performance, like ceiling 11km and max speed 670km/hr. Two 20mm ShVAK in nose. Less agile than La~5 (well its a mig! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif ) so VVS not interested.

I~225, also listed as "5A," was low altitude Mig with 2200hp (at height) AM~42FB, but was so good it hit 730km/hr at 10km altitude. Was good at high level too. First flight March 1945, so... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Many, many other Mig experimentals in World War 2. Some quite spectacular. If only the Germans had a long range, high level bombing strategery, we would have seen Migs as the most important aircraft on Eastern Front--kinda like the way the P~51 waa most important allied aircraft because of strategic bombing strategery.

hope I got this all straight!

Why don't you ask at Il2Center if anyone is modelling it?

No, I'm just not good enough to attempt something as complicated as that. I have enough on my plate at the moment with druming up support for the Whirlwind, Nils is modelling? Lol.

A Mig-5 would be fun in FB. I tend to prefer radial engines to inlines, FW190A, La5/7. That Mig would add to my list!

Actually, I'd love to see someone fly the Mig 1. Apparently had an open cockpit (like I-16) and it's flight characteristics were bordering between marginal and death trap. The LaGG 1 was much the same. Guess this is the one they called the "morticians mate". Personally, like flying the Mig 3 and LaGG 3.
