Should there be trees on the Murmansk map? I read somewhere the area is barren because it is above the Arctic circle and is too cold for trees to survive.
Does anyone know?
Also...Is there snow on the ground all year round?

I spent my army-days in Finnmark, same latitude and right west of the map border. The terrain in the map is not too bad. There are small beech trees in low lying places (typically along rivers and streams), but they'll rarely exceed 4 meters (ca 12 feet) in height.

At Vard°hus, an old fortress just north of the norwegian part of the Murmansk map (if I remember the map correctly) there is a rather tall pinetree. This tree is covered up every winter to protect it. So the climate is not very suitable for large forrests.

And no, there is not snow all year around. In summer, the sun is up all day and night, and the temperature stays well above freezing for many months.
