Is Altair's name. It's cool, yeah, but it only means "bird" or "flyer", not the intended "bird of prey".

His last name better be "Alkasser" or "Aljareh", since adding those to "Altair" means "bird of prey".

It translates to "The flying eagle," which is a "bird of prey." So you can stop being bothered by his name. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

and if im understanding the arabic words you put in the first post...then it would be the "breaking" flier(in terms of injuring others http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif) and the second the wounding flier...yeah...so those might not work but i get what you're trying to say!

Indeed, I can only think that is the only reason to spam in such fashion.

More about my question, rather the way Altair was named, does it show rather it was done in a way a arabic native writer, speaker would do it, or was it just a straight translation that anyone could have done it with a dictionary.

I hope you are right, though as much as historical accuracy they are going for, Altair is an none Muslim and with no religion, which is the opposite of being historical accurate as part of the assassin cultural background he supposed to have, not to mention and he looks Caucasian. That to me, has a degree of "winging it", leaving me with some doubt that they could be quite historically, or culturally inaccurate with the naming.

You have to remember. Just because someone is born with a Middle Eastern complexion doesn't make them a Muslim.

Also, when I was deployed to Iraq. Some of the Iraqi girls there that would flash us were as Caucasian complexioned as any Caucasion could be under their robes. :P

Altair wears a hooded robe, as far as I can see.

Edit: He may not be religiously motivated, but his master could be.

Here's the template y'all! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

"Altair Ibn La Ahad"

- First thing you should know is that "Al" in Arabic means "The" in english.

- Now to "Tair", this word simply means "The Bird", can be an eagle, a pigeon, whatever...etc.

- You may ask, "What is Eagle in Arabic then?", well It's "Nisr", and if you want to say "The Eagle" then it's "AlNisr".

- Tair doesn't mean "The Flyer", there is another word for that, that is, "Ta'ir".

- You may see another spelling for "Altair", that is "Atair", notice here there is no "l", that is merely one of the ways of the Arabic language to ease the tongue, it's easier. But that isn't the case with all the words, you can't just skip the "l" in every "Al", there are certain cases, which I don't see necessary to mention, but shall you feel curious, just ask me about it.

- "Ibn" means "Son", "La" means "No", "Ahad" means "Someone", but when they are all put together, they will give you the meaning "Son of None". It's just like any other language, some words have certain meaning on their own, but when put with other words, they can mean something else, which yet isn't far from the original meaning.

Oh another note: When adding the words Aljareh and Alkasser to Altair it will indeed become "Bird of Prey". Aljareh and Alkasser are two words used to refer to the birds that feed on meat.

I did make a sound clip long time ago and posted it here on the forums, it shows how you pronounce Altair with Arabic tongue, it seems that the clip was removed by putfile.com due to the inactivity...

Anyway, yes the "T" should be darker just as Scythe mentioned.

And about naming Altair, I will simply name him "AlNisr" because of all the carnivores, it is certainly the most talented hunter and has a far sight.

And the_assassin_07: I'm not against fun, I suppose you can have fun in 2 posts, 3, 4, but the problem is that the majority of your posts don't relate to the main topic, and by continuing to do that you might unintentionally keep certain topics at the topic while other - perhaps more important - topics that still need discussion and sinking down...

It's ALNISR, that's an "L" not "I". http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

And no, one doesn't need to be called AlNisr to be a real Arab, if that's what you mean.

There's a reason why he was called Altair: the name sounds better than Alnisr.
It's the realism-vs-coolness-conflict all over again.
They gave up being right/realistic in the name meaning so that they could have a cool, easy-to-pronounce name.
That's the whole story.

Altair is a cool name and can you stop fighting please just stop and come on the name goes with his style in the videos he jumps to kill the guy and it looks like a eagle on a mouse and also the demo where he jumps off and lands on the haystack thought there is another one where he just turns around and gets off another way which makes this game so cool because you can do it anyway you want to.

You think it's worse simply because you look better if it is indeed worse. You're opinion on that matter is bias and essentially means nothing.

By your own logic, you still have no footing to try and correct my writing. You miss capitalizations but know they're supposed to be there; I missed a "ve" and I knew it was supposed to be there. If the meaning of my sentence was lost, you would not have known what I was saying and you clearly did.

The best part is that all of this is irrelevant. If you're not willing to write to the best of your ability, you have no grounds to comment on the faults of other writings ... regardless of how important you think you are. Surely you have enough common sense to realize this.

BTW, are you sure you didn't mean "apostrophes"... or is that another England-ism? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

ok, i'll ignore the rest and tryto stay on topic.

the word "altair" can be any bird. it is a vague word that cannot be narrowed down to one bird.

but that's not all you changed from the original word, you also added the word "flying".
"flying" in arabic is "yateer". originating from the word "tair". i have no idea where you got that translation from.

if everyone translated arabic the way you just did, then i would be able to say that "altair" meant "wandering owl".

please... dont try to correct me in my own language http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif ... had you known the rules and understood how the language worked, i would have let you off if you were able to give a reasonable explanation.

His last name better be "Alkasser" or "Aljareh", since adding those to "Altair" means "bird of prey". </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

A name means nothing on the battlefield, cunning and skill do, as long as altair has these traits, then it's all good, they can call him bettlejuice if they please, nah i'm just playin, the name Altair beats the name prince of persia any day. Altar (الطائر, Arabic, "The Flyer")

@ masterneilson, what you said is true, in the battlefield it's more like "i'll hunt you down you frikin' brid!!"

but that's not what i really wanted to say, i wanted to mention this:
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content"> Altar (الطائر, Arabic, "The Flyer") </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
that is from wikipedia and i myself was mistaken when i read that. "Altar" is not written as "الطائر" in arabic. that means "the flyer", altair means "the bird", and is written "الطير".

at least, from the way it is written and the way it is supposed to be pronounced, it means "the bird". had it been "the flyer" it would have been written "Alta'ir", which makes all the difference http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

i was fooled by that wiki page too http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif

Haha, you seem so reasonable all of a sudden. Logic hits hard, doesn't it? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Anyway, "letting me off," would be a bit redundant, don't you think? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Good luck with your future arguments. Just make sure you're arguing for a purpose next time. Otherwise, you're just a trouble-maker. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
