View Full Version : So long, DiD

Well it happened, 15 missions into the original Russian Fighter Campaign, I screwed up. I collided with a BF109 as we were both going up in the vertical.

As a result of this, I have come to the realization that I no longer enjoy flying DiD. With the large amount of frustration in my life, I use IL-2 to relax, and flying DiD is no longer relaxing for me http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif

Really, to me, I now don't see much difference between starting a new campaign, and just keeping on doing the same static campaign. Starting a new campaign is as unrealistic as keeping going, you could never come back from the grave, and the only thing that changes is the stats. If you start over, you have to refly the same missions over again http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Anyway, sorry for the rant, I'm sure no one is particularly interested http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif Just saying so long to playing DiD for now.

@Neural_Dream, I'll still be able to update my little util, if needed.

Cya in the skies,
Chris

P.S. please don't take this as a bash against playing DiD, I salute all of those who enjoy it! However, I have found that it is no longer for me! I enjoy playing through the campaigns, whether I live or die! (Especially a well put together campaign!)

Flight sim Devs never thought of this...

If you get killed or captured, you continue the campaign "reborn" at that time in the campaign as a newly trained replacement pilot. This obviously could not be used in a single pilot "career" campaign but would add a new dimension to a Dynamic Campaign that simulates a short part of a war or even a complete war -- 1941 to 194x Eastern Front for example. The key here is the player not playing the role of a "pilot" but piloting to help his/her AI side win the campaign or war against the opposing AI side (which should include not just air and surface units, but model war production and damage to that as well).

To simulate being a Newbie replacement pilot, both flight sim Devs and players themselves can use methods of making piloting and fighting tough for the player until a few missions are survived. Another idea to add motivation and immersion is to be "reborn" as gunner and have to move up to pilot (with transfer to other aircraft types) after a few missions (if you survive -- if not you become another gunner).

Once you're dead, uninstall the sim and never play it again http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif Time for a Forrest Gump quote, then!

"Mama always said, dying was a part of life." or "Stupid is as stupid does."

or

Drill Sergeant: Gump! What's your sole purpose in this army?

Forrest Gump: To do whatever you tell me, drill sergeant!

Drill Sergeant: God d@mn it, Gump! You're a god d@mn genius! This is the most outstanding answer I have ever heard. You must have a godd@mn I.Q. of 160. You are godd@mn gifted, Private Gump.

Actually iirc Gibbage suggested using rifle on ourselves once we get killed in FB mission. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif Well now that is a bit ... exaggerating http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif.
