Apparently the game doesn't exaggerate....airplanes suck *** in March 1943 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

It's tough between balancing the need to charge batteries and staying submerged.

Doesn't help that I'm in an IXC. Maybe I should have stuck with the VIIB or even, as per quillian's suggestion, gone with the VIIC for the faster submerge time. I never would have thought that the few seconds being saved would make a difference, but it seems like it might!

Sure could use a snorkel right about now http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

get a big conning tower and all the machinegun AA you can get and shoot them down, when you are being attacked: flank speed rudder hard to one side tell WO to target closing aircraft medium range. if you are lucky you'll get more air "tonnage" than ship tonnage http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif those planes can't hit s***

I forgot...at some point you will be forced to dive because of to many incoming planes 4-6 at a time, personally i've encountered as many as 8 at the same time.... not funny

Tell me about it.

8 or so planes just obliterated me.

As for not being able to hit anything....I disagree...the reason the 8 planes got me was because ONE plane caused flooding and completely destroyed my diesel engines....I was in a world of hurt just north of Britain. Then my watch commander goes nuts, and with the 15 m/s winds guns were not an option.

You don't dive particularly fast when you are going 0 knots http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

A moment of silence please, for the men aboard U-124, an IXC class u-boat.

The BdU just killed me. I guess Hitler thought I was involved in one of the assassination plots or something. They ordered me to patrol AE75, less than 400 km from Reykjavik, in mid 1943. I made it there intact, and completed my patrol, but the rain that was giving me cover decided to clear out after three days, and the aircraft were all over my butt from then out. I didn't make it more than 2 days, and one of those was spent entirely underwater. Oh well, I'll reload the save from before I went in, and tell BdU where to stick these mission orders.

I always thought airplanes couldn't drop a bomb anywhere near me. They proved me wrong tonight.

One fighter came out of nowhere followed by three more shortly after about 500km west of Gibraltar. Direct hits to the conning tower and forward deck with another just a few meters off the port side. Two fully decorated men dead instantly. The deck gun, flak gun and radio antenna (at the very least) destroyed, **** near everything else damaged. Three red compartments, the rest yellow, 30% hull integrity. Massive flooding to the bow quarters and torpedo room that could not be stopped.

No more playing around with airplanes for me. No sir.

Yeah submerge in the day and charge battery at night was the general tactic of the u-boat during that time. Made for some mighty unhappy u-boat crews.

yeah, i usually crash dive when i see an airplae because they are the suck! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
ok, the truth to the matter is the flaks were only used in extreme emergency situations like not having enough time to dive or being too badly damaged to do so. in any other case all uboat captains tended to dive to avoid being hit.

I've found that by the time my crew spots the aircraft, it is typically too late. I can only pray that the bomb misses (which has been the case everytime so far). I suppose being attacked by a swarm of planes would change things, however.

Not even Arnold manning all the Flak Guns at the same time could have stopped the onslaught against me!

Watching the Damage Control Screen as I heard the bombs dropping was one of the funniest things I had ever seen though. Full compartments immediately going red and showing mass damage, my electrics kicking the bucket (not that they did me much good on the surface....they definitely need to let us use the electrics on the surface, since the first plane completely destroyed both my diesel engines), and mass flooding. Then apparently half my crew decided to die, and I got a good laugh...and then "U-Boat Destroyed" popped up.

It took some discipline, but I'm trying to play Dead is Dead, so I just restarted a new career.

Pilots definitely seem better in 1943. The thought of manning the flak guns just seems like a bad bad idea.

Figures...it was May 1943 when I died, and I'm sure my next trip to base the Snorkel would have been available. Then we only need to surface for air, and that takes a few minutes, not hours. I can definitely see why they developed the XXI http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Ugh...the thing I miss the most is my crew. What is this "fatigue" thing I have to worry about now.
