I dont know if this has already been addressed by the dev's, so dont grill me ok lol. But, it said in the FAQ or somewhere that you can promote your crew, and train them for expertes in the engine room for example. But, how will the promotion work, because if you can promote them whenever you like, you could have an entire crew of knights cross holders. Do they have to perform an act of bravery? like man a deck gun when a fellow crewman has been hit? im not sure how it would work, but its a very cool idea the devs have put in http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I would guess that after a succesfull patrol you will be granted certain amount of (points) promotions and decorations to distribute amongst your crew in order to boost their morale.
It can hardly work otherwise. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

yeah, that seems like a more feesable way for it to work. it cant work any other way, but well have to keep our eyes out, for any acts of bravery. if the AI are good! (which im sure they are) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Can't remember where I got the impression exactly, but I thought some of this stuff could be done DURING a patrol ... which means the promotion points would be given for CONFIRMED tonnage sunk.

If you had to do a crash dive before you could confirm your kill you'll have to wait for the promotion points when the game decides they found out about your kill through other means.

That is how I envisioned it working. I am really looking forward to this aspect of the sim.

Crew management will be one of my favourite parts of the game too. I just hope the feature works well. Every time it's been tried before it has been very poorly implemented or made redundant by some shoddy design decision. B-17 II had a crew management system that was great, but the chances of surviving enough missions to make crew management effective were so low that the feature may as well not have existed. This is the biggest fear with this game, since the survival rate was so low in reality - any large exaggeration of sub casualties (which is more than likely given the need for the game to be exciting) will negatively impact the crew management feature. I just hope there are options to turn down the deadliness to historical levels if we desire it so that we can manage the crews.

As far as I remember it was only in port that you could give out promotions. But I could be wrong. Think it was in Q,A somewhere or in the live chat. I would have loved to have bean part of the live chat but I had to work. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Yea,I think when you get back to port your tonage is assesed and medals given acordingly,my questions are??????

a.Can you get shot by enemy fire and thus the game ends there?

b.Can any of your crew get wounded and then nursed back to health, either in the boat or at port?

c.Does a medal given to one of your crew member's,say make him a better shot on the AAguns or whatever?

d.does drilling your crew improve dive times etc?

e.can you shift any of your crew in any position on the boat and do they all look different?

f.Are they going to sort out that **** Marvel comic looking character with the straight mouth and lifted square jaw with the expresion-less look on his face who annoyingly stares at you in the command room as if in a 1990's arcade game and say's thing's like destoyer on attack run,(even when your under water and cant see) all the time which you know anyway, and you also know that like the women singing in the map part of Rome TW,WILL ****ING PISS YOU OFF and eventualy spoil the game.?

Crew management...no worries !

"Crew...Crew..your attention please.
We will be going on a cruise to test the sub out.
This cruise will last about a week.
I will be constanlty pissed in my cabin.
Your orders are to run the sub to your best ability.
Only disturb me if we meet enemy shipping.
Get on with it.
that is all."

My helmet is here:

It's a good miniseries, technically excellent in terms of production, writing, and acting, but I find it tends to glorify war a bit (or, if not, then it indulges in the soldier cult a bit too much for my liking), and the direction sometimes seems a bit lacking.

The 'Why We Fight' (concentration camp) episode really got to me and sent shivers down my spine.
I remember the bit where that starved man comes out of the hut, props himself up against the door and forces a salute to (ur, forgot name, guy who got shot in the **** [not much help, since there were a few getting shot in the ****]). Then emotional music started up as [guy] saluted back. Heart rending stuff.

Yeah, I agree: emotional music covers up overacting and poor direction pretty well. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

b.Can any of your crew get wounded and then nursed back to health, either in the boat or at port? Yes, but I suppose it will be very slow. In one picture I posted a link to many times a long time ago, you see two wounded on the quarters, probably being healed.

c.Does a medal given to one of your crew member's,say make him a better shot on the AAguns or whatever?
It will increase morale, figure what that may imply. Proably: more morale, more efficiency. The characters have morale, fatigue and experience, and specializations: to improve AA guns skill you would need an officer with "AA artillery specialist skill" or something like that.

d.does drilling your crew improve dive times etc? Only with green crews. Then they must learn it on the tough way (combat).

e.can you shift any of your crew in any position on the boat and do they all look different?
I'm afraid they will look the same, but it is only superficial: they are not the same. And yes, you can put them in different positions, but of course not all in the same compartment. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

NB: I also liked Band of Brothers, some chapters more than others (they have many directors). It is well done, indeed, in terms of realism compared to what you can see round there.
I would like to recomend you to buy the book by Stephen E. AMbrose in which the series is based, because it's better and has more episodes than the films.
