View Full Version : Will we survive ship attacks in PF?

Bearing in mind most of the air / naval engagements in ww2 against large capital ships resulted in large casualties to the attacking force, in some cases 100%, is there going to be much fun attacking ships if PF?
Attacking a carrier for example could have 100+ guns firing at you with calibers from 9mm - 17inch.
I hope they model a dinghy! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

We'll just have to attack in large numbers won't we? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

If you can survive an attack on the AAA cruiser or the Mirat in AEP then you can probebly survive an attack on a carrier. Of course not too many people can do that so if I were to make a bet then I'd say no, you can't; I can though http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif.

Fly straight as little as possible. That's the key to survival.

think u forgot the kitchen chef's frying pan....

seriously, plz don't make this to a FLAK-whine tread, i despise those *******' that killed the rear gunner's and bomber gunner's of IL-2 and AEP, instead of killing em off, they should have made a server setting for the gunners, like, Newbie/normal/elite thing...

If by survival you mean getting shot down http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

As it stands right now, you can enter the fray in close quarters with a heavy cruiser or destroyer (or a group) provided that you are low and using speed and manuverability to rock the plane back and forth to throw off the AI gunners.

Starshoy tells us that ships will have three levels of AI as well (for gunners essentially) meaning that you can custom tailor a mission to suit the attack force. Still, going solo against a carrier battlegroup is akin to suicide.

the MIRAT is not even close to attacking a carrier group. put about 25 mirats together then try it again. then youll be getting close to the toughness of an american late war carrier group

I said *a* carrier as in just one carrier all by itself.

Who's carrier group are you attacking? Battle of Midway it was the zero fighters that decimated the air attacks, not the Flak. The planes which did make it past the fighters did major damage.

Battle of Santa Cruz the Enterprise VT-10 spent three days in combat from both the boat and shore bases without a single loss. Whats even more startling is they were a complete noob outfit with zilch combat experiance on their first cruise.

During the same battle the Hornet and especially the E gutted the Empires carrier air forces with fighters but mostly flak, of the planes that attacked few escaped the flak umbrella. The Japanese Navy with numerical superiority had to witdraw while facing one remaining carrier specifically due to lack of aircraft. The E's deck and shore bases held most of it's and Hornets planes combat ready.

So was Japanese Naval flak ever really all that murderous?

Aaaaaaaaaah.. but you forget that no US carrier went anywhere with out an escort, and they still don't today.

During WWII all US carriers sailed with a destroyer escort that furnished most of the AAA protection. Even BB's sailed with an escort.

Towards the end of the war some of those Japanese destroyers like the Akitsuki were fitted with a lot more aa guns. 40 to 50 light aa guns to be exact. I wonder if we'll be able to choose the later fitting of those destroyers in PF for missions. That would be an interesting thing to try and bomb run a ship like that.

Yep, but they still managed to make videos with kamikaze attacks. So reaching the carrier is possible http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif THAT was suicide

Yamato was a cool looking ship and its lucky that it was never used to its full potential. Yet as for bombing run it? Well 12 6in DPs, 12 5in aa, 24 25mm aa, and even 4 13mm guns. Ouch..talk about a beating. However, what if I was Japanese having to take on USS Iowa? 20 5 in DP, 60 40mm aa and 60 20mm aa! However, you might need less hits to sink Iowa still that is scary to go up against.
