Dear Oleg,

First, thanks for a great simulator. I was just wondering as the IL2 series nears its end, would there be any possibility for the ground textures to be modifiable as the aircraft textures are?

Quite simply a directory

PaintSchemes/
GroundTextures/
Kyushu/ <--- Map name
grass1.bmp <--- Texture name
grass2.bmp
forestfloor.bmp
...
MoscowSummer/
grass1.bmp
grass2.bmp

...

This way IL2 series could have different grasses for different maps. Skinners could then
improve the look of the terrain and prolong the life of the game as well as improving its
quality.

I don't think that's possible. Maps per se are kinda closed entities which have a few selected textures included. You can't slap some textures on it as with planes ...

Oh, I'm sure Oleg's team could think up a smart way to do it ;-)

While I'm on my soap box, I would like to say that the modeling of the water is outstanding, and that the engineering balance in the sim itself, equally as impressive. However, some of the textures on the earlier maps, are, I believe, neglected.

The aircraft textures were greatly improved, from 256, to 512, to 1024, and they are customizable. The skinners took full advantage of this, and some aircraft textures they created are truly remarkable. Now, if the same quality could be brought to the terrain textures it would even things up, for instance, could the terrain textures be doubled in resolution?

One area I would just love to see improved is the matching of terrain type to the real world. For instance, google is great at showing us the world from the air, a tool that was not around when Il2 started. If we use google, we easily see that most of Russia up to Moscow, is in fact farms, and it was in 1940, too. The textures for the German farmlands around Berlin should represent strip farming of 1940, as can be seen in the googles of Poland, below.

So, below we have a few googles of areas on the sim's maps. I truly believe it would greatly enhance the quality of the sim, and our simming enjoyment, if the terrain textures looked similar to some of the googled areas below.

Here we have the German (left) and Polish (right) border down the river. Notice how on the German side
modern farming techniques have combined strips into larger fields, whereas in Poland
strip farming is still clearly visible, very much as both Poland and German were in 1940.

Don't you just hate it when some innovation ends up causing you to rethink something? Well, I thought I had made my case for textures to be added, but then out comes 4.08, and someone decided to put in a desert map, that uses textures exactly along the lines I am arguing for. It is clear that those textures have been derived from real photos of desert-like terrain. As the desert map really ended up looking so good, I thought that I ought to make the case again for a general way for the community to be able to improve the terrain textures.

What I decided to do was simply to use google maps to invesigate each of the areas, and then compare them to the areas modeled on the maps. In many ways I wish I had not decided to do this, as it seemed to take forever. Oh, well, at least it seems to strengthen my case, and it might be of general interest - it was quite educational for me, the Khalkhin Gol area was quite a shock!

First, map makers, do not - at all - take these comments as critism of your much appreciated efforts.

Note: the following comments only apply to summer/fall(autumn) maps.

Ardennes

Whilst not necessarily a representation of any particular location, it is
evident that some attention has been paid to the ground textures. They show just how much more
immersion can be achieved with execellent terrain textures. I rest my case.

IN GENERAL
----------
1. I believe the town and city textures are big opportunities for improvement
2. Saturation in the sim is a constant problem.
3. Flat water is needed for rivers/lakes. Maybe a water=5, or something, for viturally flat, but highly reflective, water. Ideal for maps that are inland.
4. I believe that, for each map, specific terrain textures could be developed to improve immersion.

You obvioulsy know a lot more about how maps work than I do. But, I was wondering if a sort of post processing model may work? That is to say that the maps remain just as they are, but after a standard map is loaded, a simple algorithm would check the terrain textures' directory, and make any appropriate texture subsitutions.

Do you think that sort of post-processing solution might work ?
