Question: I have Pacific Fighters and I like it very much. What will be added if I install it over Forgotten Battles and the Ace Expansion Pack?
Answer: The easiest way to answer this question is to look at all that is installed by the three titles combined and immediately exclude from the list what comes with Stand-Alone Pacific Fighters. Next, since you need both FB and AEP in order to merge to PF, I'll treat both of those titles as one product (IE, purchased as the "Gold Pack").

Question: I see that there are several American and RAF planes included in Stand-Alone PF that were also part of the Ace Expansion Pack. I don't have AEP but I do have Forgotten Battles patched to v.1.22. Can I install the Merge version of PF directly over FB 1.22 and use the new Allied planes like the P-38s and B-25J on the Normandy, Ardennes and Berlin maps -- even if only offline?
Answer: Quite simply, no. To satisfy my curiousity, I attempted this very experiment. The "PF over FB+AEP" option seemed to install without a hitch despite the fact that I didn't install AEP. In fact, I could even launch the game to the opening splash screen that shows a split image of the AEP box art and the Pacific Fighters art, and I could go to the Quick Mission Builder screen and select planes and maps from its menu. However, any QMB combination that involved an AEP object would give me a message that the particular object could not be found, and any 'safe' combination that only involved FB or PF planes and maps would cause an instant Crash To Desktop. My theory is that the Stand-Alone option installs these aircraft but the Merged option simply assumes that the FB+AEP material is present and it shortcuts around these files.

Question: I can only install PF as the Stand-Alone version right now, but my friend installed his copy as the FB+AEP+PF version. We're both at version 3.0 (neither of us have applied any patches). Can we play together online?
Answer: No, unless your friend also installs the Stand-Alone version. The Stand-Alone version of PF is incompatible online with the Merged version, even if they are at the "same" version number.

Question: Can I install PF as Stand-Alone now, and then later install FB+AEP for the Merged version?
Answer: Yes. Actually, the Stand-Alone version and the Merged version are installed to separate folders so you won't even have to remove your Stand-alone version if you don't want to. Stand-Alone goes to a folder named "Ubisoft/ Pacific Fighters" while FB+AEP+PF Merged goes to "Ubi Soft/ IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles." You'll have to install PF over FB+AEP, however.

Question: Okay, I've just installed Forgotten Battles and I'm about to install Ace Expansion Pack. Do I need to patch FB before I install AEP?
Answer: No. Installing the AEP disc automatically applies the fixes, tweaks and bonus material of the FB upgrade patches.

Question: Now I've got the Ace Expansion Pack installed and I'm at version 2.0. I'm ready to install Pacific Fighters on top of that -- do I need to apply any AEP upgrade patches first?
Answer: No. Just to be certain of this, I installed PF directly to FB/AEP v.2.0 (no patches) to confirm that the flyables (the Spitfire Mk.IXc/e variants and the Soviet I-185) and the online map offered in the AEP_201 patch are automatically installed by the merged PF option. They are, so don't bother downloading any upgrade patches for either Forgotten Battles or Ace Expansion Pack if you're going to install Pacific Fighters over FB+AEP.

Question: There is a known "hacked" .dll file specifically for Forgotten Battles that allows the owner to play the sim without needing the CD-ROM. If I'm already using it for FB or FB/AEP, will it also work with PF?
Answer: No. This file does not work for either the Stand-alone version or merged version of PF v.3.0.

Question: I'm trying to take off from an aircraft carrier. I rev my engine to full throttle and hit the brakes key but I'm still not going anywhere. What am I doing wrong?
Answer: You must first assign a key for "Toggle Chocks" in the Controls menu. Open "Controls" then look under "Aircraft Controls." Click on the empty space to the right to highlight the box and then press a key on your keyboard. (Note: Each box will accept two key commands; if you try to change a default command you'll see your new command appear next to it. Highlight the box again and retype your key command to remove the default command.)

Question: I'm flying the "Wildcat" and I can't make the landing gear retract or drop. What am I doing wrong?
Answer: You must first assign a key for "Rise Gear Manually" and "Lower Gear Manually" in the Controls menu. In-game, you must hit these keys several times in rapid succession to fully lower or retract the landing gear.

Question: I want to land my plane on a carrier, but I can't lower my tailhook. What do I do?
Answer: You must first assign a key for "Toggle Arresting Hook" in the Controls menu. Obviously, the plane you are flying also must have a tailhook built in for this function to work. (Similar advice applies to folding/unfolding the wings on certain aircraft.)

Question: How do I raise the seat in my plane to get a better view over the nose?
Answer: You must first assign a key for "Toggle Seat Position" in the Controls menu. This function only works with a few of the planes. (Similar advice applies to the sliding canopies and the functional rearview mirrors.)

Question: I'm flying the Ki-43 or D3A1, and where the gunsight is supposed to be located there is only a big black circle. What do I do?
Answer: Select CNTRL+D to slide away the sight's protective cover.

Question: I'm flying the SBD-3 and I can't use the gunsight. Hitting CNTRL+D doesn't do anything.
Answer: Select Shift+F1 to change the gunsight view. Now you should be looking through a bombsight.

Question: The gunsights are hard to use. The targetting reticle/crosshair either moves around or is barely visible, or the gunsights are too small to see through. What should I do?
Answer: Try toggling the gunsight view using Shift+F1. This has different effects for various planes, and in some cases doing this is absolutely essential to properly target your enemy.

Question: Is there any real difference between the P-51D-5NT and the P-51D-20NA?
Answer: Yes. If you look at the gunsights in each, you'll see that they are modeled differently. The P-51D-20NA has a K-14 'Ace Maker' gyroscopic sight with a lead-computing mode; to activate this you'll have to define a key for "Toggle Sight Mode (Auto)" in Controls. You'll also have to assign keys for "Increase/Decrease Sight Distance" and "Adjust Sight Control to Left/Right." When in the cockpit, toggle through the sight modes until you see the circle-of-diamonds targetting reticle. Next, adjust the sight left or right to choose an aircraft with a wingspan similar to your opponent's aircraft. When you're on his tail, increase or decrease the ring's size to encompass both of his wingtips. Once you've got a fix on your bandit, the gunsight will help you score hits on him from greater angles of deflection.
