I was in Saigon when the US pulled its troops out in late 1972. I'm not talking about when we evacuated the embassy a few years later.

I was staying at Ton Son Nhut AB. Funny thing is, I now have an exchange student in my school that is FROM Saigon, and lived fairly close to the base.

He is doctrinated now to American food. Eats pizza, burgers, nachos, the usual garbage. Doesn't want to go back after he graduates in two weeks.

Funny how it goes around, huh?

Sorry, guys, but re-reading my post I was struck by the multi-nationality of what I referred to as "American" food.

Hah. I'm getting a good laugh out of that. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

More burgers and brides, less boots and bombs if you want to take over a country.
But the oil in Viet Nahm is controlled by by them.

You are SO right - this is indeed nutrition by international standards - maybe it's time for the "What Do You Eat"-thread...

There's a good article in this week's Economist about the current state of Vietname and how you can see big ads for Coca-Cola from the top of the old embassy. Vietnam is moderately authoritarian, but fairly capitalist these days. Coca-Cola and MacDonalds have won the hearts and minds now.
