Is there a way to tell them apart, other than by tracer colours?

I'm having a lot of difficulty until the tail gunners start firing.

I was flying an Il2 and managed to kill a Pe3 thinking it was a 110.

this is gonna hurt, but can't resist, apologies in advance http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

so how about looking at its wings and see wether it has a big red star or a big black cross? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/crackwhip.gif

on a serious note, try opening the planes in object viewer, or in arming screens, and move them around into 6 o'clock view positions with the mouse, then try to find any recognizable differences in shape, various fittings on the fuselage etc. , or the ratio of vertical stabs vs. the wingspan<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

A "world's first": fully automatic, dedicated COOP server controller. Features and available servers here (http://web.t-online.hu/rnzoli/IL2DSC/intro-coop.html).

From six o'clock position, look at the tailplane: on the Pe-2 it's slightly dihedral, on the 110 it's horizontal.

I seriously can't tell the cross from the star, I'm more likely to see yellow on the Luftwaffe planes for ID

so the Pe2's tail has an upward tilt?

This one is actually pretty easy, once you know what to look for.

The Bf-110 has square wingtips; the Pe-2s are elliptical.

If you go into the "view objects" menu, which is accessed from the IL2 main page, you can study the identification characteristics of both aircraft...a little practice and you will greatly improve your inflight identification skills.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Friendly fire happened IRL a lot too during WW2, nothing to be ashamed of. Planes like Bf109/P51, Typhoon/Anton, La5/190 or Yak/109, even Ki84/P47 or Ki61/P51 often got mistakenly identyfied as the other one.

Practice and learn. Sometimes even similar planes clashed, and the only way to tell them apart was by markings. Example is battle over Belgrade in april 1941, when both sides used Bf109E in great numbers.

Pe2/3 vs Bf110: Pe2 also has ventral gunner, 110 doesn't. From dead 6 check the horisontal tail. From a slight angle same level, check tail&cockpit. Bf110 is rarely green, while Pe2/3 comes in all colours.

If plane fires before you attack (from front or rear guns), it's really easy to tell them apart by tracers.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I think i read somewhere that there were lots of friendly fire issues between the B-17's and escorting P-47's...

The gunners saw the radial engine and thought "Fw-190!!!", and shot the P-47's down...<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

There were lots of friendly fire issues on all sides in WWII. I've read about FW-190's downing Me-109s after mistaking them for Spitfires...Spitfires downing Tempests after mistaking them for Fw-190's. One of the first times that Ta-152's were used in combat they were attacked by a group of Me-109s who didn't recognize the type. Friendly fire was far more common in war than most people recognize.

Freindly fire happens a lot. Last time I was on a Full Switch server I stalked, closed on and killed a friendly. Very embarrassing, that was - I believe - my only online Full Real kill. Gonna be a while before I dare try again.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Easiest way is to look at the wings and the tail section. The Pe-2's wings are canted upwards and the tailplane is canted down into the fuselage. Its subtle but significant enough to influence the shape of the plane.

The Bf110 is much more angular. Also squared off wingtips and the underwing radiators are a dead giveaway for the 110.

I think this comes naturally to some and not to others but just be a stickler for the details. Look for key recognition points in terms of the overall shape and don't think about details.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
