Pages I visit often that had established links i've used in the past would kick me elsewhere.....Naturally along with it I got the slow downs.

Unfortunately, ZoneAlarm, Ewido, AVG, MS Defender, Lavasoft, SpybotS&D, etc. found nothing......So I assumed it was simply the websites getting hit by hackers........Nope....Turns out it's this, and don't assume the DNS they list is the only one as mine was different, yet doing as suggested fixed my issues ASAP...

"Basically it???s a DNS infection, some website changes the DNS servers you use, i.e. they replace your ISP???s DNS servers with theirs, allowing them to redirect any requested domain name (like kinghost.com) they wish to the IP address they want; and I guess they allow other domains to go through to prevent the user from thinking their computer is broken.

If he goes into his TCP/IP settings in the control panel, in properties, I bet he will see the following 2 DNS servers:

69.50.166.94 and 69.31.80.244

The fix is to put back the original ones, or put the option at ???obtain DNS server address automatically???, depending on how his ISP works. It should do the trick.."

What it does is actually alter your DNS configuration routing all your traffic through their server....Very clever in that maybe only 1 out of 20+ sites would redirect for me, some sites more yet in average browsing about that many....Check it out, ask your ISP what DNS should be set to, as ou all may have this minor bug.

Thanks for the info and heads-up Billfish. My browser's been "odd" for a couple of months,I just wrote it off to time to reformat XP(which noone enjoys-given the 2-3 days of downloads involved).
I'm going to look into that. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Hyperion, I have no idea how it got in, that in itself a problem as email, anything downloaded is very closely checked.....More so running all the protection above it should not be able....Yet it did, and did so in a way that did not trip any of the security devices.

My guess would be that some site I visited, either had some link to another page, or movie yet in reality was a command to alter my DNS....But I don't know am no expert.

That in itself bad enough.....Yet remember, you are now routing through their server first....What if you make some online purchases, do online banking, trade stocks online.....etc. etc.....Remember, your traffic goes through their server first now http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

So for the time being, simply check your DNS....If it is not set to automatically detect make it so which clears the redirect, yet contact your ISP and ask how it should be (auto find or their number).<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

IE7 has new tools that help prevent this sort of hijack and warns you if you are being "phished" to another website, instead of the intended one. Right before I updated to IE7, I was re-directed to another webpage while logging into my online credit card account.

Good for me that they made the stupid mistake of saying that they needed to verify my account information, blah, blah, blah, as NONE of your accounts will EVER ask for that information. I immediately closed the browser.

I updated my McAffee, SpyBot and Ad-Aware and found firewall holes and a couple of other trojans. After cleaning all of that up and upgrading to IE7, I have had zero problems being re-directed.

Just some FYI, too, that even though they may be routing pages through a server, they are still encrypted and can only get certain typed information as long as you see the little lock at the bottom of the browser showing a secure connection. I never input personal information while making purchases unless that lock is there.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

One other thing that I HIGHLY recommend for Outlook and Outlook Express users, and any email programs that have it, is to disable the Preiview Pane for your Inbox and Deleted Items folders.

I used to be under the impression that viruses and trojans only came as attachments to emails and you had to actually open the attachment to become infected. Come to find that they are putting them directly into the email body and Preview Pane automatically opens the email, even if you didn't want to.

My issue with re-direction was preceded by an email with an attachment that my McAffee caught as a virus, and deleted, but the virus wasn't only in the attachment, it was in the email body itself.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Actually, I'm running IE7 and have all the filters turned on...I am "guessing" this is possibly what may have happened.

At a website (lord knows which) and click either a link/movie/control whatever....By my selecting that link, it does not send me to it yet instead (lots of guessing here) works like a command to change your homepage....Yet instead confirms your "wish" to change your DNS settings.

Now DNS settings do not get a confirmation screen....So it simply happens though possibly requiring you to restart IE before it takes place.....At that point, you now have a set DNS address in place, and you then are routed through their server for all communication yet it does not inhibit normal activity.

In any case, the above just guess work just a heads up for all to check their settings to see if they've changed......I had no idea it had, and it is done in such a way that normal antispyware and such doesn't catch it.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

That makes sense, as maybe you are "authorizing" the change by clicking the link, I guess.

Also, just as info, one thing I always do is look at the bottom of my browser window to read the address of a hyperlink as I pass my mouse over it and see if it's attempting to take me away from the main site that I'm visiting. Sometimes you can avoid links if they "look" strange.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

IE 6 and 7 run ActiveX. As long as you are open to running ActiveX controls you will always be vulnerable to having your browser and system be compromised. ActiveX controls simply have too much access to current OS operations.

The primary reason other browsers like Firefox are more secure is not through superior coding, but simply because they don't support ActiveX. I know there are extensions will run ActiveX. If you install that extension you may as well use IE.

Tainted ActiveX controls account for at least half of the payload delivery of malicious code. You may not even know as the days of viruses destroying your machine are rare. Much more likely is your machine will be used to either socially engineer you into giving up key personal information or compromised to be part of a botnet to be used in a DOS attack on another server.

Forget the preview pane being vulnerable. These days the more virulent malware doesn't even need you to run the application, just having an un-patched OE or Outlook is enough to compromise the system.

Update your machine to the latest patches for the OS. Run AV software, run a firewall and be vigilant.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
