Inspired by SECUDUS, a second (I guess) 'pit naming round-o-fun. All 10 are WWII planes. You could pretty easily follow the URLs, but try to guess instead, and don't give anything away that you didn't identify/guess without looking.

I reckon 9 is definitely NOT a mossie, as someone pointed out a Beaufighter is single seat up front, a Mossie is Tandem seating up front, now take a look at that cockpit, its incredibly wide and you can see both edge trims of the forward piece of glazing, plus theres a gunsight in the middle, this would indicate to me that the pilot sits down the middle line of the aircraft which he does not in a mossie. IMO

What about #9 being a A-20 Havoc?

Here's my take:

1. Yak3 or 9, IMO you cannot distinguish them from this angle, you have to see the engine cowling

2.?

3. Ki-43 because it has the antenna right behind the cowling flaps (Ki-44 has the antenna support at half distance between the cowling flaps and the windshield)

4. It's a Hurri, Spits have the windshield struts towards aft of the airplane.

5.?

6.?

7. Tiger Moth, you can easily see that it is training aircraft and also a british one (horizontal mounted compass)

8. P-40 without a doubt

9. Mosquito

10. DC-3 after central column, though it lacks the big compass and artificial horizon monted above the central column, like in most DC-3

For 2, 5, and 6 I have a clue but I have to think about.

Ok so can you tell us which we are right about now. I

still reckon 9 is NOT a mossie, and 5 is it a Dewoitine 520 or one of those Morane 406 things, is it french?

9 has to be a twin we know that, but it has to be a twin in which the Pilot sits on his own, look at the picture Gun sight in the middle of the plane and you can see both edges of the windscreen, so we know the guy is in the middle.

What is 9, beaufighter, beaufort, Hampden bomber i think that was tandem seating, (one behind the other)

michapma
06-18-2003, 04:02 PM
Okay!

The jig is almost up. All but the big mystery plane have been accurately identified. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif

1) Yakovlev Yak-3M
2) Polikarpov I-153
3) Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa 'Oscar' (wow Huck)
4) Hawker Hurricane (right on, guys)
5) ???
6) Consolidated PBY-5a Catalina
7) DH82a Tiger Moth (with mobile /i/smilies/16x16_robot-wink.gif )
8) Curtiss P-40E Kittyhawk
9) DH98 Mosquito
10) DC-3 (bravo, the central column is a good hint)

It is a lot of fun learning cockpits. For the Mosquito, consider that it is a wide cockpit, and as mentioned, the gunsight and other hints give it away as a one-seat width cockpit. Classic-aero, you got your details right but the Mossie apparently wrong? The Mosquito has tandem seating as you noted, so I'm confused by you saying it's not a Mossie. Not a Beaufighter, correct, but a Mosquito it is.

http://www.kiwiaircraftimages.com/images/main/91_motat/MOTAMOS.JPG

Anyway, regarding the width, look at the photo again and you can see that there is some lens distortion on the right-hand side, like when someone takes a close-up and your nose looks too big.

Now we just have to identify number 5 correctly! /i/smilies/16x16_robot-very-happy.gif

No, 5 is not french, look at the instruments, attitude indicator, compass even fuel tank selector - they all indicate it is a american plane. Since it has a gunsight it is a fighter or a dive bomber. But we can rule out the fighters because I know them all very well, so most probably it is a dive bomber from Pacific. Which one I don't know, but I think is not hard to find.

LOL Classicaero, I got the Mossie wrong in the original from SECUDUS. I could only say it was British in that one, but was guessing a two-seater, and not thinking of a tandem! It really is a wide cockpit, and you had most of it worked out. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif

Huck is red-hot, but I'll just go ahead and leave it until tomorrow to see if someone else really knows their dive bombers. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif
