Heya everyone! I recently got a *wonderful* gift (all of 2 days ago) of a CH Fighterstick USB and Pro Throttle USB from my uncle who thought I was into flight sims!

I had looked at them, and I love planes and whatnot, so I figured, hell I was given a nice Stick/Throttle, lets give it a go.

I just purchased PF on amazon.com and it should be here soon! I'm just saying 'hello' to everyone and will probably be back soon enough with venting and questions. IL-2 came packaged with the stick/throttle and I must admit- learning to fly is a bit harder here than in Battlefield 2. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Welcome! You won't regret it. Make sure you have the latest patch ready to install (check it's suitable for what you have e.g. there's a patch for PF stand-alone and one for merged IL2/FB/AEP/PF).
Good luck!
PS Read as much as you can in the meantime at places like http://www.airwarfare.com/ for some great guides.

Also recommend you buy Forgotten Battles Gold pack!! (Forgotten Battles and Ace Expansion Pack)
Pacific Fighters is not good by itself and not many online servers cater to only PF http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

You need rudder pedals as well. CH Pruducts sells some decent ones for about eighty dollars (don't buy directy from CH Products).

I second the motion for CH ProPedals USB! Go to some place like NewEgg.com, cheaper than buying direct. The 4.01 patch does model engine torque fairly well, so at full realism you will need rudder pedals to keep your aircraft straight during takeoff. Rudder control also helps during a dog fight as it allows you to jink your aircraft side to side to line up that shot and even spay bullets from one wing tip to the other.

That is the HOTAS I am using. I like them a great deal.

Nice Uncle,
Send him a thank you http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

All the advise given is great. Don't be afraid to ask questions, and HAVE FUN.

Most of us are old and forgot how to have fun so we moan and groan about flight models, and what not. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/mockface.gif

One thing I liked about IL2 was the TRAINING movies that let you pilot the plane afterwards. The lessons were fresh in your head so you could copy what you just saw, without having to reload a new window or menu.

IF you determine you like flight sims, and wish to continue your aerobatic escapades, then get the pedals and a TRACK IR.

TILL then HAVE FUN.

Hmm, well the game (PF) should arrive Monday- if anyone could give me some tips where to get IL2 gold store wise that would be cool, otherwise I'll just purchase it online and have more waiting. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Anyways, I'm hoping to get into the flight sim scene- I'm a big FPSer and sometimes you just need something *different*. And that something can't always be World of Warcraft. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

So yeah, few questions- the track IR. Isn't that the contraption that you wear a hat and it lets you look around by exaggerating head movements? Sounds awesome, but I don't know about how much it would cost.

As for the pedals- I wish. If I determine that simming will be a big part of my "down time" then I'll probably invest in them to make it a full experience instead of using the micro-stick on the throttle for rudder http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I'm assuming you're a resident of the USA. Most Comp USAs or Best Buy will have it. It is getting rarer to see, but my local Comp USA has always had copy when I drop by.

If you DO go buy it make sure it's FORGOTTEN BATTLES GOLD. There are still plain olde vanilla FBs out there as well as FB Ace Expansion Pack.

Rudder pedals are a must for some planes imo. Especially if you are just using the old il-2. But a twisty stick does perfectly well for most and definately works really well off line.

Too be honest I unplug my pedals most of the time as I dont like them at my feet when Im doing other things on my computer. So I fly most of the time with just the twisty and I do fine. Well fine compared to when I crawl under the desk and plug my pedals in to fly a bit that is.

Ah good to hear I can get the FB Gold at compUSA, there's one somewhere nearby. One thing is that the CH Fighterstick has no twisty axis, so I use the micro-mouse for rudder right now.

So here's my evening update: Tried the first "Fighter" mission in IL2 and found myself throwing on Autopilot until the fighting began. I must admit it's rather difficult to gain speed when trying to keep up with the squadron. Any tips/whatnot are appreciated here.

Onto the fun part http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif
Once I was into the attacking of bombers- you know, the nice steady platforms that seem to absorb countless machine gun and cannon rounds- I have been unable to take more than 2 down, and the 2 I did take down went down after I flew past them (yes, I am getting better at matching speed. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)

So I suppose this is going to be my "mini-journal" for my adventures in getting into simming. As per usual advice is always appreciated!

(Long story short: How do you keep up with Comp players taking off and speeding away? AKA I can't get my speed above 180 for some reason, even with WEP engaged http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif)

Minor Update:
1) Yes, I spent literally all night flying in IL-2.

Besides that I got a few things done that I'm fairly "proud" of. I managed to catch up to the squadron in one run-through of a mission before we engaged bombers, then continued to shoot two of them down solo.

I also played a "pickup" mission for the fw190, and I have mixed feelings about it. It handles really well in IL2, but I'm not sure I care for the main cannon/machinegun it has, feels like it fires *slow*.

Anyways, I can already tell I'm getting a bit better, so it's definately nice to see some results!

When I played the campaighns I just put it all on auto till I saw something was about to happen.

They left me in the dust a bunch of times too till I just started to hit the autopilot to keep up.

And dude you gonna need at least a twisty to play online. They're cheap.

Anyways it's a great sim. If you can get through a campaighn you can get to the best part of it easily.

Plim I don't think you've read the entire thread- I don't think I'd want to fork out money for a twisty joystick when I was given this beauty (http://www.chproducts.com/retail/j_fighter_usb.html) and this baby (http://www.chproducts.com/retail/t_pro_throttle.html) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I may end up getting pedals, but for now, the micro-stick is working well enough.

Welcome to our world!!! Before you even install PF... hold off till you get the FB ACES GOLD pack. http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00018RR6G.01._SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Then install FB+AEP+PF+patch 3.03m+patch4.01m. and you will be good to go. Dont even bother with PF as a stand alone since you will most likely want to go the whole 9 yards. You say you are into warbirds.... well this is the sim for you bub... You like challenges? You are in the right place. I have been flying this series everyday since early 2002 with the exception of 5 weeks training out of town last year and whatever vacation I have taken... and it is still just as fresh as day 1 to me.

Here is a list of what is available in the full merged version as far as aircraft go:

I may have missed a thing or two but thats the gist of it. Not too shabby if you ask me. It is a great sim and this community isnt too bad either... Hit the Sturmovik Essentials link in my sig, lots of good stuff there. Particularly Airwarfare.com and Sim HQ.

You will want to get those pedals as well.... rudder control is a must.. especially under the 4.01 FMs... Make sure you map rudder trim, chocks, tailhook and canopy open/close. Once you get settled in here you are going to love this sim.

Thanks for the awesome post, and holy ****, I didn't know there was THAT many planes in the game! Amazing! I can't wait to get PF/FB gold. PF should be coming tomorrow, so I should probably locate a COMPUsa nearby, since the Bestbuy around here doesn't have it!

looking for a squadron to get the reins of the game under control?

Your stick setup is the same as mine. Come see what flying is all about @ (See link).

Hope to hear from you, even if you are just trying us out.

As of now I am at home, but once I get to college I may be able to come up with a more normal schedule. For now I am just looking to get PF/FB:G! None of it has arrived yet!

Hey everyone! Sorry for the lack of updates: no luck finding the IL2 Gold pack in retail stores nearby, so I will probably "Amazon" it tomorrow, and hope it shows up on Monday. In other wonderful news, my wonderful Dell 8300 decided to die after I attempted to put more non-Dell parts into it. It's all good though because I was able to get a decent upgrade through zipzoomfly! Everything *should* be arriving tomorrow, so I plan on seeing how everything works when that time comes! Thanks for the support fellas.
