A TEMPORARY FIX for the sound stuttering on onboard sound cards (at least on my nforce2 board) is to adjust your sounds hardware acceleration to one notch above the minimum. This completely eliminated all the sound stuttering on my box, but I can't guarentee it will work for yours. Also I found if I turned the hardware acceleration all the way down the sound effects (gun shots, ricochets mostly) would loop pretty bad.

You have to restart the game for the changes to take effect; i.e. you cannot alt+tab, adjust the setting, and expect it to magically work.
