Hey, I know I sound like a noob lol, but when I take off(not using a joystick), everything goes fine until I first leave the carrier, my plan like instantly starts to violently barrel-roll to the left or right. What's the problem here?lol

"(not using a joystick)," there Sir is the first issue: if you go out and get even a cheap stick it'd improve your experience immesurably.

Really. I'd tried keyboard- I know it's no fun http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Hahaha, but I mean is the joystick the whole problem with doing wierd barrel-rolls? lol

Probably....since it is more difficult to counteract the effect of torque in this game with a keyboard than it is with a stick.

triad773

You control your ailerons better with the X-Y axis. You cannot develop any feel for the axis if you are relegated to pressing keys in reaction to events that are being displayed.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

It'll make it easier...

The roll is caused by two things:

1) You aren't going fast enough or there isn't enough lift under the wings thus one wing stalls and the plane plummets. Try dropping takeoff flaps just before you leave the deck.

2) Engine torque. The propeller spinning infront of you is trying to spin the plane itself too. So while its fairly easy to fight the torque with a bit of rudder trim plus a joystick...its gotta be darned hard using a keyboard.

A cheap Saitek joystick can be found for $20 or $30 Canadian. It isn't the greatest stick but it'd be massively better than what you have now. If you really love the game the Saitek X-52 is a great buy...but at $160-$200 its a serious investment. If you're new...go for the cheap one first.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Not to mention the fact that I can't raise my landing gear. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif I press g(the default key) and nothing happens. :|

roybaty
10-17-2006, 12:26 PM
Some planes have powered gear, some have manual gear. Look for these settings in the keyboard commands. G is default to toggle powered gear, not manual gear. Manual gear requires a key command to raise the gear, and another one to lower it.

I also HIGHLY recommend getting a joystick, flying with keyboard alone will be very hard to do, and if you play online you'll be toast. Plus sticks have software to program macros and key commands, and make things a lot easier to manage.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

roybaty

Well I myself have a stick, throttle and pedals. Taking off from a carrier (or anywhere for that matter, just no room for error on a CV is all http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif) requires a mixing of all 3 inputs simultaneously.

Throttle to max, hit the button for "toggle chocks", add a little rudder to compensate for torque, nose down (gently) until the tail is up, keep max power, once off the end of the deck gently pull back a bit (too much an ya stall), retract gear to reduce drag and viola!

Simple http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Okay, I just went out and bought a joystick, but now the game wont let me use it. How exactly do you have to install it into the game?

Syanide89
10-17-2006, 03:47 PM
Well I got the joystick to work, BUT now I am still experiencing the "roll". How exactly does rudder trim work, because I think this may be my problem...

triad773
10-17-2006, 03:56 PM
For takeoff, you are best to use the full right/left rudder keys in conjunction with your joystick.

As you throttle up, watch which way your tail is moving toward. Use the < or > keys to correct (between M and ? keys). Before you know it you'll be up and about http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Its like the problem is that if I pull up too much I spin out of control and crash soon after "take-off", but if I don't pull up enough then I crash anyway. It's like the torque is too much for the plane. Any ideas? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Try taking off in an SBD or a Japanese Val from a moving full-sized carrier. Don't take a bomb load at first. This should be very easy. Once you get the hang of that, add bombs. Eventually move up to fighters.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Alright cool. But do you know what the problem is with the uncontrollable spinning? I mean I'm guessing its the torque. But how do I fix it, or make it managable?

triad773
10-17-2006, 06:15 PM
Here's another thing you can try as I know it works better with some of the heavier aircraft: as you crank up the throttle, don't just slam it forward. Increase it slightly, then rotate the throttle handle all the way forward. This will lessen some of the initial torque load and make your acceleration more gradual and controlled.

Good luck.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

EZ solution:
1. Go into Difficulty options on the main menu.
2. Individually disable features that you aren't ready for, including torque, wind, and p-factor. Or, switch all to "easy" preset.

Does your stick have a twisty stick rudder control?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

M = map by default. If you aren't seeing your plane on the kneeboard (white icon), friendlies and enemies, and waypoints, look at the difficulty options menu again. Go to the second page of toggle switches and look at the "Icons always off" (IIRC) toggle. You may have to flip it 'off.'

If you've already started a pilot career, whatever settings you had when you began the career are permanent. You'll have to restart the one you're playing or begin a new one with settings you're comfortable with.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

1. throttle back to reduce thrust, or
2. assign some keys to handle radiator control.
3. put difficulty on EASY- I think you avoid overheat that way also.

You can set for unlimited ammo, or if bogies are around, try ducking into some clouds, or learn some evasive maneuvers quick.

C key by default will change your crew station. There is a thread here in the forum that explains how to use the level bomb site. Not sure where but a search should find it using the key words "Level Bombing."

Overheating: learn how to work the radiator/cowl flaps, and don't go full throttle all the time. Or, go with the easy solution and turn off Engine Overheat in the Difficutly Options area.

To get to Difficulty Options, open the Quick Mission Builder. Click on Difficulty Options at the bottom of the next screen. Notice that there is a 'Next' button to take you to a second screen of switches.

You can also disable "Complex Engine Management" to make the computer control your engine settings. I think you can still overheat the engine but you should get better overall speed and power for now.

Ammunition: You can't re-arm during a mission. However, you can use the difficulty options to give you unlimited ammunition. Unfortunately, this can be a curse if you're armed with heavy bombs because you'll always have heavy bombs on your wings; also, rockets will have a slower rate of fire. But its a good training tool. Finally, some planes like the P-47 have an extra ammunition loadout.

Bombs: These are controlled by one of the joystick buttons by default I think. On my joystick, I have three buttons on top besides the directional HAT switch, and one drops bombs, one fires rockets and one fires cannons or secondary weapons. Maybe I customized it that way but I'm not sure ... if you have a simplified joystick without so many action buttons, you may have to assign a keyboard key to release the bombs.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

AI does suicidal things so sometimes its better to not stay with your leader. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

But to answer your question, there is a toggle that brings up text over each plane in view that gives information about it. I forget what the combo is by default, but it will cycle between no 'icon', distance only, and extended information about each plane including callsign I think. Try that ... otherwise, just follow the pack as best as you can and attack whatever they attack.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Yea, I do see the info above the surrounding planes, but I don't see any callsigns, It's all just distance and some other numbers... :|

Skycat_2
10-17-2006, 10:08 PM
Let's say you're part of a flight of four A-20s and you're #4.
The full icons would appear as:

.30:A-20:01*
.20:A-20:02*
.10:A-20:03*
(Your plane)

The first part is the distance away from your plane. Second part is the aircraft type. The third part is the position number, so :01 is the formation's leader. Your wingman in this case would be A-20:03.

In FB/AEP, the German and Russian fighters have callsigns like "Red 1" and "White 2" in the icons, plus the Luftwaffe has extra symbols that represent staffel markings. I don't usually have the full icons toggled in missions so I just assumed that all planes had similarly detailed information.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Skycat_2
10-18-2006, 12:19 AM
R = radiator. At least I think this is the default. Having radiator open lets air through but it usually slows down the plane a little. 'Closed' gives you better speed but your engine will heat up faster.

Best thing to do is throttle back to around 85% when you're cruising. Don't 'throw it all to the firewall' and fly at 105% throttle. Some planes overheat faster than others so its a matter of knowing your engine also.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Click here and read (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/23110283/m/5111047273) about what causes wings to dip. On the carrier you're getting induced yaw from prop wash and a sudden loss of compensation for torque when the wheels come off the end of the deck. Use a big slab of rudder input to compensate and as little aileron input as you can get away with. And get a joystick.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
