Yes right in this moment U-571 is playing here in german TV. And heh ! Im into the movie for about 45 minutes and i havent puked yet.

But im close http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif REAL close http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Its been a while since i saw it. Now i realize how many dialogues have been stolen from Das Boot. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Its unbelievable http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Was it so hard to create own ones ?

Or this :

"if the Navy decides that this is more important than our life, then we will die for our mission" http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Oh come on ! What is this ? Some kind of strange Al Qaeda agenda ? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

But the best thing until now was this : We will capture the german sub , get the enigma and then we will sink it and go home with S 33 http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Wouldnt it had been wiser to sink the old S-class pipe that can bearly hold himself on the surface and take the modern VII ??

Maybe to get the technology into the hands that is nearly so much worth than the enigma itself? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

But for the luck of those "heroes" an torpedo left them only the wiser alternative. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

And then this torpedo duel ..... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif UNDERWATER! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Totally blind.

Sorry i dont want to get you bored with my endless dislikement of that movie. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

U-571 is as realistic and funny as the movie airplane.

Your right...that movie was terrible. Why torture yourself and watch it http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

A GOOD modern sub movie (if you can find it in Germany) is Crimson Tide.... it may not be totaly realistic, but the tension in that movie was great.

Im still trying to decide who is the worst actor. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Its really hard. They are all so "good".

Maybe the german actor , i dont remember his name, (he plays the captain of the german sub)

I know this guy from "Der Untergang". He did the same kind of bad acting there.
He was the only main actor who didnt got an award. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I know Crimson Tide. Its quite ok. And it had REAL actors http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Did the Germans have ASDIC back then?

I also love the look on the black guys face while their getting the snot blown out of them. Hes jusst like-dang it here we go again http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif- like its more of pain in the butt than a terrifying moment where he could drown at any second. Now thats some acting. I can never finish that movie, it just hurts too much. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif

Somehow i managed to watch the entire movie yesterday. But i had some really bad nightmares about it last night. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I was on U-571 and part of this "hero" team. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

We were on the tower as this german recon planes comes towards us. It took just a second for the first idiot to scream "A GERMAN PLANE , MAN THE AA GUNS !" http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I grabbed this guy and shouted at him : "WAKE UP ! YOU IDIOT ! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

We are on a german sub, and we are disguised as german sailors. AND YOU ******* REALLY WANT TO TELL ME THAT YOU HAVE THE SMART IDEA TO START SHOOTING ?" http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Then i asked " HOW MANY IDIOTS ARE ON THIS SUB ERRR I MEAN U-BOAT ?"

Answer was "WE ALL SIR!"

And then i knew that i was surrounded by idiots in really bad movie nightmare. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

"OK ! IF THIS IS SO , THEN START SHOOTING YOU IDIOTS !!"

Then i woke up. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

And what do you think of the interior of the boats. I visited quite some subs but none were as spacious as those in that movie.
And the crew. Clean and shaved http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Propably they build them so huge to have space for all the camera equipment and audio stuff a movie set needs. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Had the american subs really still such huge steering wheels for their main rudders in the 40ths ?? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I love the scene where the captian wears his bad weather clothes just to take a look trough the periscope. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Water was flowing down on his head all the time http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

And the guy with the hammer who was searching for weak spots in the hull. It doesnt took much time till he found one. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

And this on periscope depth! What about 80 or 150 meters ?

No one would get me into such a sub ! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Thats a deathtrap. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

No you are not!
The Brits did it and also they deciphered the enigma code.
But this is a typical alteration of history by a Hollywood movie.

I like U-571, it was interesting and decent enterainment. I dont look for realistic scenerios in a "movie". If it was a biography or "based on a true story" then yeah i would have been dissapointed. But it was a fiction movie, designed to hold the peoples attention that know nothing of u-boats, or the navy. I think it funny to read some of the posts that tear it apart here. I havent seen Das Boot yet because I cant find it really but im gonna order it if I have too. Now Crimson Tide was the best, I LOVED that one. I always try to remember the "movies" are for entertainment, not research....lol. And as far as who captured waht first....dont really care, we were in the same war together working for a common goal. And as far as Hollywood "altering" the story...I dont believe it said any where that we were the first, we just wanted our own. The brits prollt didnt want to share, or couldnt. Who knows. Not intended to be a flame btw!

Its only fair to credit the right people... not on a nationalistic basis, but on an individual one. And we may have been all in it together, but some had it harder than others and that should be respected.
On a common note, thanks America for helping us avoid being ruled by Nazis... at least I think we're not.

The problem is that for many people movies replace real history.
Actually I heard in other forums that people believed that "Pearl Harbour" was an exact replication of historical events.
When you alter history then you discredit the actual achievers. Probably it had no significance at all during those days if Britain or USA...or Portugal was the first who captured the enigma machine, due to the fact that all we were at the same camp and people wanted to end this lunacy as soon as possible, and for that reason they grouped their efforts in order to achieve that.
But when at Present days you serve fictional events as factual then you do no service to those who died in the process.
Oblivion doesn't worth to those who gave their life willingly or unwillingly.

And at the end has any one checked the real history of U-571?
Was the Captain really so bad as it was described at the movie?
Did he really murdered un-armed sailors.
What his relatives ( and the relatives of his crew) has to say about this movie?

My opinion is that if you want to do a movie for something it existed, you must follow facts as something sacred.

btw
It has nothing to do with flame we simply exchange views http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I thought it was the Poles who did it by hand
it took them like 6 weeks to find the right code

The British captured the first Enigma device from U-110 on May 9th, 1941. The crew of the U-110 abandoned thier boat thinking it was going to sink but it didn't. The Brits boarded it several times and got the Enigma. After a day they scuttled the U-110 because they didn't want the Germans to know they had captured an Enigma and being spotted towing the U-110 back to England would have been a dead givaway. The U-110 crew was held in extreme secrecy until after the war. It was one of the most closely guarded secrets of the war.

Yes you have absolute right. The team who decipher the enigma machine was Polish.
The capture of the enigma was done by British.

Some polish mathematicans escaped to england just a few days before the attack.

They had an commercial used enigma with them. But this one was only comparable with the military enigma and not identical.

They used this as first stone to build up the Ultra project.

Without this look into the basic mathematical concepts of the machine an captured military enigma would had been nearly worthless.

To have the machine is worthless if you dont know yet what concept the codesystem is based on. And in an war the thing that is mostly needed is time. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Only through the polish work it was possible for them to build the necessary calculation machines in time.

These machines made it possible to quickly go through billions of possible configurations and find the right code by chance. The captured codebooks werent useful anymore after the codes had been changed.

Just to give some credit where credit is due.

The Americans also captured an enigma machine later in the war.

And to give some valid criticsim where valid criticism is due

The film is sh@te.
