I am taking a break form my He-111 campaign whilst I get to know the bomb sight fully (can't get my head around it for some reason!). So I have started an IL2 campaign.

First mission was attacking a German rail yard, no fighter cover and no real German aircraft interceptions, we lost 2 IL2's to flak.

Second mission is attacking a German airfield. No fighter cover. Er, okay I thought we will do our best but if you hit a wasps nest what do you expect to come out? Anyway, we got within 2 minutes of the target and two 109s and two 110s hit us hard. Out of seven aircraft five of us had gone down as I and the other IL2 reached the airfield. The tracers made me jump and banked left at 400 ft, no use though as the 110 behind promptly cut my right wing off. The last IL2 managed to get 4 rockets off and then the hunters brought him down.....

A sad day. But my question is: was it really expected for IL2 (and other bombers) to go on such strikes without fighter cover? If so then it is nothing short of suicide. Will we eventually get fighter cover later in the campaign, because I can see it being a very short on if we don't!

Even so, it's such a bloody good game I am not complaining!

I experienced similar problems while playing the dynamic campaign. In one mission I had to fly CAP with a flight of 4 Me109F4s and intercept some bombers. We followed the waypoints over the sea, circling betwenn 3 waypoints for about 10 minutes until the bombers appeared. After i shot all of them down, I activated the autopilot, thinking "Hey let' s go home" but there were obviously more waypoints to go so my hole flight crashed into the sea because they were out of fuel. The mission planning didnt let us return home. I hope you understand what I wanted to say, sry for my bad english.

Yes, I remember when I once tried starting an IL2 campaign of my own. My flight was tasked with attacking ground targets not far from the front lines. Of course, within a few miles after crossing the lines we were intercepted by a flight of enemy fighters. Having no fighter cover and no other choice (these were early IL2s - not even a rear gunner) I started dogfighting the fighters. I think I did admirably well all things considered, but, unsurprisingly, was promptly shot down.
I don't know how often these kinds of things happened in RL (I do know IL2s were often sent on suicidal mission - i.e.: attacking an enemy airfield day after day with each flight losing their lives there), but I do know it doesn't make for a very interesting simming experience - you takeoff, you die. The end.

Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

Alstiff, I know! I wish more people would post after action reports as they fire me up to play even more.

If any of you have been over to Sim HQ and ready any AAR by BeachAV8R then you will know how powerful they are.

Lets have some more.

I had the same problem until I decided to become the CAP for my brother IL-2s. I watched in amazement one mission where a pair of 109's flew up behind our flight of 6 IL-2 (series 1)'s and smoked #6, then #5, then #4 and then #3. I was flying #2 and said enough of this. I peeled off and immediately got yelled at for breaking formation.

Since then I break formation immediately at the sight of 109's or 110's and assume a position 300-400m above my flight. Higher than this and the German's automatically engage you. Lower than this and you can't jump them as they swoop in on your fellow IL-2's. Even if you can't get a good shot off on a boom and zoom attack by a 109 you can scare him off with a short burst from your MG (don't waste cannon rounds for this) if you can get it somewhat close to him. The only problem is now you get the full attention of ALL the interceptors. You better be a good dogfighter with the IL-2 (series 1 and 2) if you do this. I've gotten pretty good at it. One mission it was me against 5 109's and I was the only one who flew home. I just upgraded to the 1941 field mod and it is a dog, but I still can get kills with it. My kill numbers for my career is around 75 in 82 or 83 missions.

You can out turn a 109 or 110 by taking the fight very low (100m or so) and banking very hard left or right and chopping your throttle so that you are just above stall speed. The 109's won't stay in that kind of turn with you for very long and you can sometimes get behind him.

If nothing else you can break up the German attack and let your mates fly the mission. They can maybe help you on their way back home or you can head for the nearest friendly airfield and let the AA help you out with the Germans.

You are speaking about bugs, but it was a reality. Soviet bombers often flew without escort in the beginning of the war.

Start a campaign with the highest rank. Anything else is a waste of time.

Keep one section with you, get the other to engage the fighters. As soon as any plane is attacked, order your section to attack, so they dive on the fighters, keep your wingman with "Cover Me" order, and he'll look after you.

Use your guns advantage - spray and pray from and range out to 400m. One or two hits from the 23mm will usually put a fighter out of the fight. Make head on passes, odds on their guns won't do much to you.

You might lose one or two Il-2s, but you should be able to take out the fighters. If it's too hard, try selecting the I153 instead of the Il-2 for the first few Il-2 campaigns.
