Hi, I am new to the IL2 series, having recently bought PF. Tis the best flight sim I have played since Mig Alley.

Anyhow, just a small point I was curious about concerning the Zero float plane, sorry I forget its designation.
I was mess around landing it, and was very impressed with the physics of it all, however when I tried to slowly run it up a beach it kept randomly exploding. Now, I was expecting to break a flot off or somesuch if done poorly, but always exploding is a tad harsh isnt it?

Congradulations to the developers anyhow, what with the Hurricane IIB, the Beufighter and with the recent patch the Buffalo flyable I am happy as larry.

Unfortunately, that might happen any time you try to land it on a beach, or the ground in general. might be a bug? I have never flown it

~edit
Buffalo (as the B-239) has been flyable since Il2Sturmovik:Forgotten Battles

emily explodes on contact too... think i managed to knock the floats off zero with a landing on the ground...

shame u cant belly it..

it cant make the transition from water to land. I wouldn't say it's a bug, just the way things are. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Just park her in a bay and wait for the native island girls to pick you up in their canoes. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Are you sure the Buffalo was flyable in stand alone PF before the recent patch?

Anyway, sorry if this has been noted before, but also a small bug I have found is that some of the P39 varients with the 37mm cannon seem to have the sound of the P400's 20mm cannon, unless I am mistaken.

No, Buffalo wasn't in Stand alone PF to my knowledge.

You misunderstand. I posted that it was in Il2:Forgotten Battles since it was released. Sicne I have the merged install, I don't know if the B-239 was in PF or not, or if it was released with the patch. But I was flying it for the Finns the day FB came out

Argh, well at the moment you see I am playing stand alone PF, and the Buffalo appeared with the patch.

Just been trying various things, and the Corsaire(sp?) with the 4 x 20mm cannons seems to have the cannons planted as a secondary weapon, while not having a primary weapon, is there a way of setting the controls to fire secondary and primary at the same time?

On a different topic, playing with the quick fight generator, I set 3 average Buffalos (including myself) against 4 average Zeroes of the latest type a few times in a row; and on every occasion the Buffaloes killed all zeroes without loss. I am by no means complaining, just trying out things and finding a few odd happenings, but are some of the aircraft not properly balanced?
It seems odd that there are so many posts on minute cockpit details when there are likely some more pressing issues.

I hate the instant explosions. uggh!

That's the AI's fault, not the Flight Model itself. An AI flying a P-38 will try and turn-fight a Zeke, so it doesn't mean much. The AI is weird, does not exploit the advantages of the aircraft it is flying, and cannot be trusted for comparative purposes.

The resource allocation actually does makes sense. The modeller lavishing attention on every cockpit detail has no involvement with the code - most notably the AI (which will never be good enough). Oleg has good project management skills, managing to keep his team working. This is why work on BoB was underway before PF was started. And, since he doens't get a big check from Ubi until BoB ships, engine work on PF is going to be minimal. Time Value of Money: the sooner he finishes BoB, the more it's worth.

PF is up to three patches, with one being a beta to get an early release and more reports and parts of a fourth are already out. A recent patch added new splash effect. That work is at least based on techniques from BoB code, and it improves something that dates back to the early days. Sure, it isn't fundamentally changing the engine like improving the modelling over 10,000m or improving taxiing handling, but flight models get tweaked, sometimes across the board like in 3.03 for some climb performance issues.

At least we're getting patches, issues *are* being addresses.

Oops, I got a butten pushed. Gottta de-map that one.

Yeah, it seems like the landings are a bit.....dangeroud than it would be in real life, you land a fraction faster, slower, one wheel, you explode, even without fuel!!!

don't understand it......

But you CAN do this!

On a side note, I lost the two other floats on account of going too fast...

After that, I landed (one wing sits in the water, but you don't capsize) and throttled up again.

I expected the wing to rip off, but I took off, as you can see...

But you CANNOT belly it, even if you don't have ANY floats...

I've knocked off the center float only and had the two outer floats and was able to land it, and it would stay afloat. But after the last patch, it won't stay afloat any more with only those outer floats. I've noticed it seems all a/c sink faster now.

Float planes explode when touching ground probably because exploding is very simple way of modelling
the fact you can't operate them from the ground. This is computer programming, and stuff like this
is normal. Extra code is needed to model floats as crippled landing gear for example.

i wonder why floats or floatplanes cant belly land, id figure a zero landing wheels up would be the same http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

im not sure, but i think some had explosive bolts to blow off the floats to belly land, maybe wrong plane..
stuka D had that option...

I saw I think it was Seahawk take one up on the beach and park it....very very realistically. So it can be done, I however have not been able but couldn't land on a carrier the first time either http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Just park it very close of the beach, then wait for the tide to come down, it will stand on the sand.

Actually if the outer pontoons are lost and the plane still float this I would consider as a bug. I actally first saw this behavior online and observed it. I actually reported this to Oleg as a 'collison detection error' if not a 'bounding box problem' since this will never happen in real life with the WINGS floating the rest of the plane on one side for a long time. I please me that this behavior was changed in the last patch, at least it now the plane ultimately sinks without the three pontoons intact...http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Oh I do like to fly this plane online whenever I can http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
