I mean, what were those for? To see the carrier fantail as it passed below? I'd hate to take my eyes off the deck at that moment!

Why didn't later model planes have them?

I've got more questions than a spoiled grandchild today! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

"...There was also a small window on each side of the floor of the cockpit to give a pilot better downward visibility, though in practice the belly windows proved nearly useless..."

Well. That answers that. Oleg has modeled those correctly for sure. They are useless!

However from the same article:

Inflatable flotation bags were fitted under the wings for ditching at sea, but after the bags spontaneously inflated in flight a few times, leading to crashes, they were abandoned. Electronics included a radio and, at least eventually, a radio direction finder and an identification friend or foe (IFF) unit.

If the early F3F had an IFF unit why isn't there one in ANY IL2/FB/PF plane! I could do without the "ditching bags" though. I have enough keys mapped!
