View Full Version : Strange quirks in the game....

I'm sure some of these have gone around the block several times but maybe some of these are new.

I decided to try running the game at lower resolutions, ie 640 x 480 and 800 x 600 just to compare the fps. The first thing that happened was that when selecting 640 x 480 resolution, stencil buffer, which I had disabled on someone elses advice, was suddenly enabled again. I disabled it and ran the game several times to the same result. It was automatically enabled.

Next I reinstalled the game and in the initial config disabled stencil buffer. Now when running the game several times at 640 x 480 res it remained disabled.

Furthermore I tried this with 800 x 600 to the same result.

What I did discover was that at these lower resolutions it did not matter whether stencil buffer was enabled or disabled when trying to locate aircraft at distance and against the ground textures. The odd thing was I was now getting better frame rates with stencil buffer enabled. A whopping 65 fps with 16 planes in the air at 800 x 600 resolution. This is good for my rig.

Running at 800 x 600 resolution and in QMB I pitted some Bf-109F-2's against some I-16 fighters. The I-16 fighters were impossible to shoot down. At one point there were no less than 5 of my AI Bf-109's and myself on one I-16. I pursued this I-16 until my ammo was gone. My AI buddies did the same. I watched them all unloading into this plane. It just kept flying with no apparent damage.

I now did the same thing with LaGG-3 1941 enemy aircraft. The LaGG's could be shot down with Cannon and MG's in some cases. In other cases the LaGG's became invincible like the I-16's. I downed one LaGG with a short burst of MG's. Another LaGG I completely emptied the rest of MG rounds into it and it didn't exhibit any damage. Pieces were flying off this plane like no tomorrow and it continued on its merry way.

This was repeated again with Yak-1's. All the Yak-1's were shot down by my AI companions. Again we were flying Bf-109F-2's.

Now for the even stranger part, I seemed to score more fatal hits on enemy aircraft with stencil buffer enabled than when it was disabled. This experiment was repeated several times and I have noticed this in the past also. Maybe this is a visual thing? Ya got me?

To continue, when using 1024 x 768 resolution and above, some of these strange occurances drop out of the picture but my frame rates take a nose dive.

Every time I start this game there is some oddity that makes me wonder about the integrity of the game as a whole. Maybe on a different PC with different hardware it would run and act completely different?

I would imagine some of these inconsistancies extend to online play as well.

I hope the patch brings us a different game. I keep coming back night after night but think I need to shelve this game until it is fixed.

well sir my specs are P4 2.0g, 512mg RDram, GF4ti4800, Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum, i have to say that the things you are experiencing are just plain bugs and glitches. when flying the campaigns i noticed that the sound of some A/C make this kinda "thumping" noise, kinda like a bass drum or something, quite strange indeed. when flying the Russian birds i dont have any problems, just an occasional stutter from all the static objects and too many flak cannons. i also noticed when flying the Hungarian missions, when you get to the 109-G6 you start to hear that "thumping" noise again.

the game is riddled with bugs theres no doubt cause all the other games i play run extremely smooth, all most movie like quality. like for example i just bought Rainbow Six3, its about 2g's in size and its a huge game, i run it on 1024x768 and have no problems what so ever. i also have Vietcong, which is a CPU hungry game, i run that game with no problems. all other games run great on my computer except FB, it runs great online, but the campaigns are just plagued for the time being.

roll on the patches....8) gooday sir

I tried the demo for that, and it would crash
my PC so hard it would reboot!

Seriously, Rainbox Six 3 does not need the same
computational power as FB. The size of the image
on the disk just means that there are lots of
maps, etc.

What is your computer popov? I have a xp1700 on a kt133a motherboard with one gigabyte of sdram, and a gf3ti500 vid card, and i run smooth as sild at 1600x1200. My agp aperature in the bios is set at 256, on other computers that would let me i have set it a 512. the only time my framerates drop is if i fly over complicated terrain, like cities and such.

it doesnt matter what computer specs anyone has, with FB there is bugs, if you have a high spec computer it just means you can run the bugs better than most.
