I have the original IL and i can't do anything.. I get shot down everytime i hit the sky.. I really like the realistic feel of the game and want to learn more; however I am getting very frustrated. Can anyone recommend a good plane to start out on and some tactics.. I don't want to quit playing the game out of frustration. I have been playing for one month and still stink terribly. Any help would be appreciated.. Thanks

I expect this is off the net? Try the LA5, a great plane to start on. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Personally I`d get FB and adapt to those planes.

Give us a little more detail and we`ll all try to help.

Try the LA5fn
You could allso try flying at 1/2 speed to get a feel for the game and to make aiming easier ,once you have done this you can move up to full speed .

This was my first flight sim and doing this helped me greatly .

hey if you keep stalling during a turn and falling out of the sky...don't pull back on the stick as much... if you start to see your site wobbling you getting close to stall.
Always try to gain altitude as well...if your on the deck you run out of options to escape. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif...use those flaps as well... I use um to recover from a stall.

As was suggested FB might be the best way to adapt. The AI enemy fighters are more difficult, at least in the unpatched version, but your flight models might be easier to get used to.

Practice in solo flight or quick combat with no enemy fighters. Just take it one day at a time and enjoy the experience flying the different aircraft and their varying characteristics. Remember, the designers tried to incorporate as much realism as they could.

You can also adjust the realism settings to give you as much advantage as needed when learning in combat. You can go all the way and make yourself invincible. Its time and patience, a lot.

I like the very early versions of the IL-2 such as the series 1 and 2. They are very stable and will rarely stall. They are only slightly slower than the Bf-109 and Bf-110 and they can take a lot of punishment if the enemy gets on your tail.

You can out-turn both of these German planes by banking hard right or left, pulling back hard on the stick and cutting your throttle so that you are only just above stall speed. Take the fight as low as you can so that can't "boom and zoom" you. The IL-2 carries a large amount of ammunition so you can practice firing at all sorts of angles and distances to learn when your guns are effective and when you are just wasting ammunition.

Make sure you record your missions to see what is effective and what is not. I like to watch the mission from the enemy's point of view (cntrl-F2) to see when my bullets hit and how much damage they do. You can learn a lot by doing this.

Good luck and have fun.

The best way to learn shooting is to set up a mission in the QMB with friendly planes only. They will fly straight on so you can practice getting on their 6 one time, and deflection shoots another time. When you shoot pause the game, switch to another plane's view (shift+F2), unpause and watch where your bullets pass (slow down necessary).

Also you can turn the immunity on and learn dogfighting with an AI plane. But this doesn't come even close to online dogfighting.

First thing you must do is to adjust your stick.
What is your stick? Ask for help in order to make some good adjustments in pitch/roll/yaw cause if your stick is not well adjusted you'll not be able to fly at all.

Ask for this in this forum. Tell people your stick and ask help /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

After this, I would suggest you to join a squad cause there you'll get maximum help in little time /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

How do i join a Squadron? I'm kinda newbie in online dogfifhting and got blown out of the sky several times also,.. so i hope they don't ask for references!! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif but this didn't disappointed me... I just love the feeling of being fighting against human instead of ai on Il-2... I used to play Eurpean Air War from Microprose, and CFS3 (those rare days it worked). Any advice in a Squad to join?

Thanx and regards.

Check the squadron forum on this site, and find a squadron in your neighbourhood.

If you're European I can definitely recommend www.europeanaf.org (http://www.europeanaf.org) - it's a bunch of very nice and very skilled guys with lots of humour.

I was also thinking about joining a squadron since I seem unable to advance my abilities alone... But my impression is squadrons recruit people with some skills already... To say nothing that I have the 'old' version of Il2

My recommendation abot joining a squad- DO IT!

I learned way more than I could ever learn offline and the manual is useless for `real` flying. Guys in a squad squeeze every bit of juice outta the capabilities of each plane and general flying tactics.

I tell you- it`s a whole new world!

p.s. I actually learned to fly WITH stalls and spins because of their help (the excellent Training Officers) and will never fly with stalls, spins off again! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
