Hey I coulda sworn I posed about this before but I didn't see it come up on the boards so I'll try again.

Whats up with the Westland Whirlwind? That thing looks like quite a beast. But I'll confess I know next to nothing about it. Did it ever see combat?

And of course the magical question... is anyone modeling one for the game?

"The official Whirlwind whiner" (he knows who http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ) wanted it so hard that he even managed to get data from Westland. Unfortunately, the Westland guys just withdrew their help unkindly. Anyway, the project went on, but finally it was stopped. Don't know what happened exactly with it, but I guess that a pit for it was facing too little reference, among other issues -the most common, lack of time and resources.

As for the real plane, I think it was a nice aircraft plagued with engine issues and growing pains. It was relegated to secondary roles such as Channel patrols and home defence, it saw only limited action and was used by a few fighter squadrons. The improvement of Spitfire and Typhoon families, and the apparition of twin high-performance aircraft such as Mosquito and Beaufighter made its development innecesary, so it was finally scrapped.

It had an impressive look and not bad handling and firepower qualities, anyway.

A sad outcome both for the real thing and its virtual counterpart. Maybe in BoB...

It was used primaly on rubarb missions over France trafing and bombing different targets
this because it had an excellent low alt performance. It was faster than both the Spitfire and Bf109. and had better range.
I think its time for SECUDUS to write a thing or two about its combat history again.
It really was an excellent plane.
the reason it didn´t got modeled was because
no modeler seemed interested in it,
they were more interested in the "late-war
well known" fighters instead.
all the referens is availeble including the whole cockpit.

please Secudus cant you post some Wirlie history for us?

I€m always bleating on about just how good the Whirlwind was and what a forward British design for an A/C dreamt up in the 30€s it was€¦ But until now I€ve never put down just how the pilot€s who flew the thing thought of it! So, this will be a Whirly Warts & All post!

Until now that is€¦ What follows are some of the written accounts of just what the Whirlwind was like to live with. I will over the next few days post written account of pilots who have flown this €˜Forgotten€ British Fighter, along with reports made at the time of its service with the RAF.
I shall start with Captain Eric Brown€s professional thoughts on his short time in the Whirly and let him relate to you its virtues and vices.

BTW Captain Brown was a former Chief Naval Test Pilot and the Commanding Officer of the renowned Aerodynamics Flight at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough. And is listed in the ******ss Book of Records as having flown more types of aircraft than any other pilot in the world.
He has written a number of books on his experiences including €˜Wings of the Weird and Wonderful€ of which, part of this is taken€¦Enjoy!

Good reading and awesome pictures. We can only hope that by the time Bob is released......lets see, gonna need a P6/Ath128 with a 512 bit vid card/28 pipline.

I need to go fertilize the money tree.

This Second chap, who goes by the name of Hugh Bergel spent the second World War as a Ferry Pilot, working for the A.T.A. (The Air Transport Auxiliary to you€¦) Delivering over 900 A/C of 80 different types to the R.A.F. In the four and a half years he delivered 6 Whirlys.

What follows is his first meeting with the €œCrikey€ and the impression it made€¦

No, not a bit of it i'm afraid p1ngu666... But I must admit to being very tempted to buy it, just so I can actually fly her!

It's the best i've seen so far as regards to accuracy. There are some points that need addressing, but thats me being Mr Picky...Lol!

That said, if anyone does get the itch to model her for BoB they will have to pull all the stops out. I think she would be breath-taking...

Bugger it, I think I will order FS2004 and the Whirly I think I deserve a little present to my self! I'll let you know when I do!

Regards
