I know what you're going to say. My system is below spec. But meh, I've already got the game running now (at max settings no less which I'm thoroughly shocked by). However I'm running at a rather low framerate so, from those more intimately familiar than I, is there anything based on my below listed DxDiag report that you can suggest to ensure that I get the best possible results from what I do have please? Both for Creed and everything else

Hey Bobfish http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Until very very recently, I too had a vastly outdated system and I was still able to run Oblivion and things like this on it at relatively high settings by streamlining my system. The only reason I have a new system now is because these next gen titles would not run at all.

Anyhow, if you want to sreamline your system here are my tips:

First and foremost - Go to The Win XP Services Removal Guide (http://www.overclockersclub.com/guides/windows_xp_services/) @ overclockers club. This will straemline your system a lot for running games. Edit: Just be aware of the error on here: DHCP Client service must be on automatic if you use internet connection sharing. I found this out the hard way http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif

2. - Run "msconfig" and uncheck Process SYSTEM.INI and Process WIN.INI. This is called a Clean boot and saves your system resources. Also go to the Startup tab and disable any apps that you know you don't need to run games. In here you will find lots of system tray applications that again, when running, use your system resources. Ignore the services tab as you've already addressed these issues in the step above.

3. Increase your page file. The ideal size is three times your system memory. Keeping it on it's own small disk partition, say 5Gb in your case, is the most system efficient way of handling it as well providing you have enough free disk space. Partition your drive with utilities like Partition magic etc.

Aside from that, general system maintenance, ie. keeping your drives defragged and your drivers relatively up to date should ensure you get the most from your pc.

Hope that helps.

That's really useful. Thanks

sting having the page file on its own partition makes very little differance as the drive still only has oen reader head. in bobs case if his hard drives are seperate he should install the game on the drive windows isnt installed on as then the head only has to concentrate on the game and the other drive only has to concentrate on windows/page file.

You know, I actually suspected that made a difference. I've always installed games to the D drive. It just seemed to make more sense to me. It has any noticeable effect?

Yes it does make a difference, in terms of fragmentation. Often the page file gets stuck in the middle of the disk which forces files to be fragmented around it. Okay, I think there are probably defrag apps that can workaround it but I personally haven't seen any.

Whatever, keeping your drives in good order is always advisable.

I could really do with clearing some of the chaff from my D drive. It has less than 9% free space left

yes the installing on a diferant drive to windows makes a huge differance as the game files get their own reader head and the one for the other drive only has to read system files and the page file. meaning technicaly you can read twice as much data at the same time.

sting there are hundreds of programs that will keep the page file unfragmented but to be honest if you have the file at a set size (best preformance) it is constantly using that space so it constantly has it available and shouldnt get fragmented unless you change the settings or let windows controle it.

Cool, cool. I have it set to a range of about 3-4gig last time I checked

bob you realy want the min and max to be the same number. like I have 5000mb on C and 3000mb on D both are fixed file size so they dont ajust or move.

Sorry caswallawn,

I wasn't clear, I meant that the files, seperate from the page file on the same disk can get fragmented around it because the page file gets plonked right in the middle of the disk most often. I wasn't talking about the fragmentation of the page file itself. Like you, I don't see the point of defragging a file that is constantly being altered by the system.

Really? I've been told, a few times now, to make sure you have a buffer between them. Though I was always dubious of the sources

one program I would advice if you do want all your files next to each other is diskeeper as if you have the time to leave your computer idle long enough it actualy works through the drive and puts every file in a folder following on from each other so in the case of a game folder every single file from the game would be in same area of the drive following on from each other. but lat time I did that was on a nearly full 160gb hard drive with a AMD XP 2600 and it took about 18 hours to do the entire drive as it also moved the page file then tracked it to keep it in one block.

My C drive is only about two thirds full so I doubt it would take THAT long. I'll have a look for it then. Is it free?

Ah so there programs that can do it then? This is what I was getting at, moving the page file to the end of the drive or something.

But 18 hours??? Wow... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sadeyes.gif I guess it's an overnight and much of the following day thing then. I think I'll keep mine on it own partition

Diskeeper lite is free, but obviously not as good as the pay for version.
Diskeeper Lite (http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Utilities/Disk_Maintenance_and_Repair_Utilities/Diskeeper_Lite.html)
There's also a 30 day trial of the latest full version on the Diskeeper site.

at the time the pc was about 2 years old and was about 30% fragmented 'm too lazy to do it lol and with the amount of stuff I download and remove from my pc's they get fragmented fast unless I have a program like diskeeper that keeps on top of it.

So how large, exactly, would you suggest I set my page file to? I have about 50gb left so I could use all of it? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I would say about 4000 or 5000 as the general rule is 3 times your ram but if you want games I would set it slightly higher.

Bobfish_Almight
05-07-2008, 02:10 PM
I'll go with 6000 then, and see how it goes
