I can't remember if I forgot, or if I never knew at all. But what's with the non consecutive numbering?

For instance with the Jagdgeschwader why is there no JG8, JG9 or JG10? etc.?

The same goes for Kampfgeschwader etc.

Why were some numbers chosen over others, and who got to choose them?

Good question!

Hitler and pals were into certain occult traditions. Maybe....?

Military units are often numbered randomly or at least non-sequentially. The intent is often to confuse the enemy as to your actual strength. The U.S. does this with naval forces for example. There has never been a 1st fleet, but many of the numbers after that have been and are currently used.

If I recall correctly, early war, each of the original four Luftflotte received a batch of 25 Geschwader numbers which were allocated sequentially. Luftflotte 1 Geschwaders were numbered up to 25, Luftflotte 2 Geschwaders were 26-50, Luftflotte 3 Geschwaders 51-75 and Luftflotte 4 Geschwaders 76 -100.

I am not sure how long this system lasted.

Eventually their were a total 7 Luftflotte, I am not sure what happened with Geschwader numbering by that stage.

Galway's correct WRT to the allocation of numbers to certain Luftflotten. The system, however, was abandoned in 1939 as it had proven to be too clumsy. It was geared towards peacetime but in war units would be shifted from and to. No way to nail them to a certain Luftflotte's area of responsibility.
