View Full Version : Ground gunnery practice--from a B-25!

For those of you who've played around with the FMB... Have you tried to create a mission where you're on the ground in a fuel-less B-25, defending against marauding planes that want to smoke you or some nearby asset? It's IL-2's version of AAA defence drill.

From the top turret it's loads of fun!

I've made several variants of these missions, where either I or some nearby tanks, for example, are the target of one or more flights of fighters or fighter/bombers.

If your plane's the target, killing bandits as they bore directly in on you is fairly easy, provided you commence fire early enough. Wait too long and you'll soak up a lot of lead. (They have a tendency to break off if you get hits before they're in their own firing range.)

But with another target placed 100-200m distant from you, you get to practice leading your shots, and without being on the wrong end of the attack. If you set lightly-armed fighters upon one or more heavy tanks, they'll make repeated passes until their ammo is exhausted, or you take 'em out first.

Often times the enemy will circle about like vultures at approximately 1km range.. but with a lot of lead and some extra elevation of the guns you can reach out and deal meaningful damage. Other times a plane might fly almost right over your head at a couple of hundred meters altitude (particularly if already damaged). Dead meat!

Start out with slow fliers like the Gladiator, or fairly easily flamed crates such as Val. After you've got their number, move on up to Bf-110's, etc.

Have a blast!

Good idea, I might just try that. Sounds like you could put together a simple mission for people who are interested, too. I think you just volunteered yourself http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

ThanX, I'll give that one a try...
I downloaded Ubers Quick mission generator the day before yesterday and was too overwhelmed...

I also see this one comes with some sample missions which look like fun to try...

Will see ...

That's exactly what inspired me to try making my own version(s) with the B-25... the 360 degree sweep of the top turret means you're not limited to just the rear hemisphere (or less for some of the really small-arc rear gun mounts).

I should look into making available a sampling of these missions. But I'm always surprised at the seemingly large percentage of players who haven't delved into the FMB. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

So, in a nutshell, what do I do to upload to Rapidshare?

Well Mission Mate is nearly just as simple as the Quick Mission Builder... In fact it's so simple a http://adweek.blogs.com/photos/uncategorized/caveman_1.jpg caveman could do it.....

I tried this out, it's good fun. Air gunners will shoot back at you, but they haven't killed me yet. When they fly directly overhead, it's great: a well aimed burst can make it rain 'plane parts.

Makes me wish we had player operated AAA. Perhaps that's coming in BoB...

Ahahahahaha LOL I love the Caveman bits...

Mission Mate is excellent and shouldn't be too difficult to install. If your concerned about messing up your Game setup then make a new directory with IL2 in it and try installing there.

Just take the Ubisoft folder and copy it to the C:\ Drive. It will take a while to copy then take the IL2FB.exe and make it a new shortcut on your desktop and rename it IL2 test then test out these 3rd party application on it if you mess up no biggie just stare over.

Cheers!

Oh its good fun, I like doing ti flying too, and get a bunch of guys to man all the gun stations and have it attacked by multiple boogies.

I also like to hide a Ju-87 in a building and work over fly bys.

here is a pick, I have a track at home, If I remember I'll post it too.

I thought there was a single mission like this in the back of a fuel-less SBD that cameas a default with 1946? Prolly there before the 1946 version, but wouldnt swear to it.

When we get enough squadm8s together, we get a couple TB-3's and have m8s man all the gunner positions and do a TB-3 dogfight. Sometimes we get enough to man two TB-3's per side. This is real good fun.
