I see that many of you are Kaptains of certain uboats. I was wondering if you can choose your own #, or if you were assigned it by your game, etc.?

When I did the training stuff at the Naval Academy, I was assigned U-556. When I started my career, I was assigned U-53 (VIIB). I'm just trying to figure out how this works.

Most of those banners you see are members of an online flotilla. They get assigned a specific boat number and use that as their banner in this forum. They are pretty good looking too, I might add.

If you want to have a specific number in the game, you can do so with the SH3 Commander mod. You can also use it to choose your next patrol zone.

You can also manually change/specify your boat number, if you don't want to use SH3 Commander for some reason. It's done as follows:

To change your boat number at the beginning of a career, you have to do it after coming back to base. Once your first patrol is over, exit the game and open the Patrols_0.cfg file (it's in the My Documents/SH3/data/cfg/careers folder in the folder with the same name as your commander). This is a simple text file, so you can open it with Wordpad or any program that will save it as-is (i.e. without changing the .cfg suffix). All you have to do is look at the 25th line of text. This is the U-Boat's number. Just change it to the number you want and save the file. Do the same with the Log_0.cfg and the Patrols.cfg files (the boat number is easy to spot). Each patrol will now recognise your new number, as will your in-game crew compartment screen and every patrol log.

For changing a U-Boat number half way through a career (e.g. if you transferred to a new boat), just alter the Patrols_0.cfg file (only the listing for the upcoming patrol) before you go on the first patrol in your new boat.

I forgot to paste in the name of the source of this method to my file of mod methods way back when, so I'm sorry I can't credit the person who originally posted these instructions.

Hi Wilhelm,

€œDose make it more realalistic??? or is it just to add another layer to the game by changeing stuff???€

..Yes! Emphatically, Yes! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I think this really depends entirely on ones point of view (per the individual using it, and the reasons for doing so).
It offers some features that Do indeed afford ways of simulating a more realistic Uboot experience.
In the main, for myself at-least €" I€m personally more inclined to answer that it adds another layer through €˜changing stuff.€ http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It is very nicely done, however €" whichever way one may most enjoy its numerous features.

Best,
~ C.

Just for sake of adding the note to your Q. here for this thread.
I much enjoy allowing SH III to randomly generate/assign my boat number: I play DiD, and just modify my sig. banner here for each new boat / boat number given.

Best, and happy hunting!
