Top 25 list (http://pc.ign.com/articles/772/772285p1.html)

Well deserved Oleg & 1C... although I would have put you in the top 10 for the entire series... Still you represented the entire genre.... the only flight sim to make the list. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

Cool!

I often feel that the IL-2 series is completely overlooked by all other than the hard core fans in here. It seems like noone except a small amount of very specially interrested people has heard of it.
Hopefully this can bring some more players into the game.

I've always been suprised how 'almost underground' the whole IL-2 family is,at least it made somebody's list.

We admit that IL-2 Sturmovik didn't exactly scream "best flight sim of all time" when we originally reviewed it. But thanks to a couple of excellent expansion packs and a complete dearth of competitors,

These guys know NOTHING.. what a bunch of @#%#$^#$. This game topped them all from the 'First till the Last' editions.
I suppose not everybody can be a fighter/bomber jock http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I could quibble with a lot on that list, but not the inclusion of IL-2 Sturmovik. Kudos to them for not "going chalk" and putting in games like ours and "Grim Fandango". Some good "deep cuts" on that list.

A friend at work loaned me his demo disc for IL2 and it took awhile to "get my head in the game" but it's kept me coming back almost every day for years. It's amazing how much you can lose your edge if you're away from it for a few days.

Starcraft .. yeppers. Got a few of those still around for LAN parties. Great RTS game.

Patially agree...
My list of Top 3:

1)IL-2 Series
2)WW2Online
3)Red Orchestra

But regardless of what we believe in, being in the top 25 of 1000s of games of all times, is quiet good IMO.

True, everyone has a different reason to love their favourite games...

But some standards are independent of people's preference- design, longevity, replayability, genre-breaking.

Il-2 scores high in all of these.

*sighs* I have an email that pinpoints the date I blew off CFS3 for the Il-2 demo.

I am not sad if other people consider X-COM a better game then IL2. At least it is beaten by a very very very good game.

If I really need to ask, I will say:
No Dune2 and Wolf3D??? They are genie-defining games for God's sake!!!
No Syndcate??? I bet you are still too young for it, go google it and play it in Dosbox before you come back and argue.
No SWOTL, or Aces of the Pacific, or EAW??? I have nothing to say...
No Links386??? well ahead of its time when it released.
And no Lemmings!!! how dare you!!!

We should have a how did you start with IL2 thread . There was one sometime ago, but with a lot of new 'fresh meat', we can do it again.

Me :- I'd been playing the dynamix games, chuck yeagers combat, Rowan's disasters. and was browsing the computer store when I saw this 1st edition of IL2. I vaguely recognised the plane on the cover from a brief moment on the 'World at War' series. Had a look at the box... hmmm Russian developers, I'd seen some great stuff coming out of the then Eastblock.. I'll give it a go... on my 32MB ATI graphics card http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif I got a slideshow = 1 frame every 5 secs..
Usually I would have 'turfed' the disk, but something made me hang on to it. 6 months later I upgraded my pc, and out of boredom re-installed IL2... Here I am today... the greatest FW190 pilot EVER... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

WHen I first got IL2, and before I got online (For about 5 years in total) I used to fly around in Wonderwoman View with every option on Easy except vulnerability and realistic gunnery! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I used to love it too. Unlimited ammo, no blackout LMAO.

Blowing up tanks with my 30mm on my 109 because I had unlimited ammo, carpet bombing Trucks in my Bf109 with unlimited 500k bombs spamming out of muy plane http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif.

Well done Oleg and crew.

My first taste of IL2 was the demo on PC Zone magazine. I had followed it's progress since first reading of it, and seeing some pics.

Found an old magazine {The One], with one of my old favorites reviewed, anyone else remember "Flight of the Intruder?" The first I remember where you had a wingman.
It looks reeeaaly old now.

IL2 has been on my H/D since the begining, the only one that comes close is Rome-Total War. Now replaced with Medieval-2.

Ones I agree with:

IL-2
Sims
Oblivion
Grim Fandango
BF1942
Age of Empires
Half life 2 (I'd have picked 1 though)
Starcraft
TIE Fighter (I never expected to see this, truely one of the BEST games I EVER played in my life, I can't stress that more)

The rest are mostly good, but I wouldn't put them in my top 25. Missing for me in order of importance from most to least are:

Duke Nukem 3D
Red Alert (!!)
Wing Commander (3)!! - fantastic
GTA1 (or any others)
Hitman games
Commandos
Monkey Island games

Be that as it may be.... it is good to see someone outside of the flight sim boards recognizing this stellar... and I do mean STELLAR product.

Considering that this engine is as old as it is and does what it does... and has held the interest of so many for so long... it is obvious to us how good it is.. but as I said... I like to see any sim but this sim in particular get all the props it can because none of them (the accolades) are good enough to really really testify to the impact that this sim has had on so many.

Think about it.... I know more about history, military, aviation and otherwise.. aeronautic theory, day to day life in many other countries... without having been there, PC design, maintenance and construction, mechanics, ballistics, networking, I have become a graphic artist, I have learned how to build websites... (I'm not that good at it yet without a wizard.. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif but I can do it..)... the rudiments of programming.... and stuff I probably dont recall right now... I have made some really good aquaintances with people thousands of miles away from me that I probably never would have had the pleasure of knowing..... and I am sure that I am not alone in being able to say that.... all because of this sim... because one guy had a vision.... and had the sticktuitiveness to see it to fruition. I dont know about you but not too many other things have held my intrest as consistently as this sim has... certainly no software title... Shuucks.. man.. I will help toot on any horn that is blowing a tune for this sim. It is a masterpiece in so many ways.

Well said Bearcat,

It is very much a similar experience for me.
I have always been interested in warbirds from a young age, and this sim really grabbed and held my attention. It is an education in a box so far as WWII aircraft, and the very best flight sim I have found to date. (My wife claims that if there is a sim that I dont have, it is because it hasent been made yet http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ) (I wish http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif)
I am just not put together to play games like the many fantasy types of slash and bash generes currently available, though some have great artwork/graphics. BUT A GOOD FLIGHT SIM?? COOOOOOLLL!!!
I discovered the IL-2 series one day when I was surfing various WWII aircraft sites, adding to my collection of pictures of WWII planes. I first found the Mission for Today site, and luckily clicked a link that brought me here. WHAM!!!! HOOKED!!!!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
But since then I have vastly expanded my knowledge of aircraft and other related subjects, and had a great time flying the skies of IL-2. On my first flight I knew it was special when I tried a couple of barrelrolls and my stomach kept rolling when I snapped the bird back to level flight, and again the tremendous rush and sense of oncoming doom, as I went into a flatspin that I could not recover from.
Anyway I think this sim should be at the very least in the top 10,(#1 for me), however as previously stated to make the top 25 of all time, is a very notable achievement.
My hat is off to Oleg and crew, and also to all of you folks in the community who do so much real work to make this the best sim for me, and others.

Regards
Dag

I actually stumbled upon Il2 on the internet before it was released. From there I followed it closely and anxiously awaiting its arrival at my local game store where I had it on order. That seems so long ago now. When I first got it installed on my machine, a Pentium 4, 1.8 and I do not even remember which gfx card I had back then, I was so frustrated at the difficulty in the gunnery. It seemed so much more difficult than any other sim I had tried. With a little practice though I soon got used to it. But from that first flight in Il2 and seeing how so well done everything was, so much better than anything I had ever tried before, I have loved it ever since.

The list is rubbish and filled with WoW type games. Flight Sims are overlooked completely because they are not FPS, RPG or mainly RTS. How the hell did Tie Fighter get in there but not one of the great Command and Conquer series not? Sid Meiers Pirates? What the hell is that?

I must say that I preferred X-Wing to Tie Fighter, though they were both absolutely superb. Some of the best gaming moments of my life were playing those games. Seriously sweaty palmed joystick action.

Nothing has come close to that level of enjoyment from a game... apart from maybe Final Fantasy VII on PS1... until I got my hands on Forgotten Battles that is.

For example I find lack of Unreal pretty downright ignorant.

In terms of its Ambitious scope and longevity I would have said that certainly deserved to be in there...a groundbreaking Sim, extremely advanced for its time...just look at its Dynamic Campaign FB/AEP/PF could still learn alot from that!
