WOW , you did your homework. this is an impressive list. I think I'll print it out , then compare it to SH4 and see how well they did.

That is quite a list. And to think it took an average of 8 or more US torpedos to sink a ship. I'm also quite surprised at the number of carriers.

It does kind of make me drool over the thought of playing SH4 however.

Class Tahio(1 ship) Interesting side note there about Taiho. The carrier survived the torp attack intialy. Then the idiot captain had the fumes pumped through the ventialtion system and Well something sparked and then boom! Also the blast initialy went upwards but was directed back down by the ships armoured flight deck and blew an enormous hole in teh bottom of the ship! To the ships credit it still took her a while to sink.

It's also interesting to note the percentage of ships that were sunk in 1944 and 1945.

......Amazing what you can do with torpedoes that work, isn't it???

Fleet tanker "Erimo" was damaged by K.XV, not O.15- O.15 was built for European waters and did not see service in the Far Easthttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Originally the R.Neth. Navy built two sub types based on their intended service area: Those whose numbers had the prefix "O" (for "Onderzeeboot", or submarine) and Arabic numbers were intended for service in Europe, those whose numbers had "K" as prefix (for "KolonieŽn or Colonies) and Roman numbers were originally built for service in the Netherlands East Indies. Starting with "O.19" and "O.20", submarines were built for service as required worldwide- originally their planned numbers were "K.XIX" and "K.XX".

Shinano was sunk directly as a result of the work of US codebreakers. They intercepted and decoded a message detailing its departure and I believe its approximate route. I'm recalling this from memory at the moment, but I do have the exact info in one of my books. Will have to dig it out later and flesh out the story some.

Rafe1, did you really have to quote that extensive list instead of just replying directly? My eyes are still spinning from scrolling that list then your duplication of it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

Here is a reproduction of the message sent out by COMSUBPAC re: the sailing of an unnamed carrier [I believe it was Shinano] mentioned above by Marius. I have tried to reproduce the formatting of the document as it appears on the dust jacket of the book, "The American Magic" by Ronald Lewin, about the work of American codebreakers involved in the defeat of Japan:

FROM: COMSUBPAC 09/0815 June
TO: ALL SUBS GUARDING
NPM FOX
INFO: CINCPAC

PREC: OP OP OP

ANOTHER HOT ULTRA COMSUBPAC SERIAL 27 X LARGEST AND NEWEST NIP CARRIER WITH 2 DESTROYERS DEPARTS YOKOSUKA AT 5 HOURS GCT 10 JUNE AND CRUISES AT 22 KNOTS ON COURSE 155 DEGREES UNTIL REACHING 33-55 NORTH 140 EAST WHERE THEY REDUCE SPEED TO 18 KNOTS AND CHANGE COURSE TO 230 DEGREES X SALMON AND TRIGGER INTERCEPT IF POSSIBLE AND WATCH OUT FOR EACH OTHER X WE HAVE ADDITIONAL DOPE ON THIS CARRIER FOR THE BOYS NEAR TRUK WHICH WE HOPE WE WON'T NEED SO LET US KNOW IF YOU GET HIM X UNKNOWN WHETHER SPEEDS GIVEN ARE SPEEDS THROUGH THE WATER OR SPEEDS MADE GOOD X DISTANCE THEY WILL TRAVEL ON COURSE 230 IS UNKNOWN BUT BELIEVED TO BE ABOUT 100 MILES

Wouldn't it be nice to get this sort of info in SH4? I read this book many years ago, but will probably re-read it again soon as SH4 re-ignites my interest in the Pacific war. I recall it was a very informative read covering an area of the war that seems overshadowed by the Ultra work against Germany.

Info:

"The American Magic - Codes, Ciphers and the Defeat of Japan." Ronald Lewin, 1982
The formatting looks odd, but I think the ISBN # is 940.54.86.73. Probably out of print after all this time.

Guys,

Just wanna say thanks to pples like klcarroll, Danelov and Kaleun1961 and others digging up all the Pacific goss recently on plane, ship and sub data.

I am totally engrossed and pumped for SHIV. I always had plenty of dvds and books on the uboat war, but suddenly realised how naked my shelf is on the pacific!.

Time to change that! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
