What is the most memorable mistake you have made in your U-Boat or Fleet Boat?

Mine was the time I collided with Denmark. Sailing from Kiel I dragged and plotted a course but neglected to zoom-in and check for obstacles. My course ran straight through a small island off the coast and, running at x1024, that was the end of that kaleun!

Accidently ordering a crash dive while being in shallow waters. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Just recently, was stalking a Japanese task force with 3 BB's, some sort of cruiser and 14 or so escorts. While plotting a solution, pressed S accidentally....

Didn't last long

Yup, done most of them. I think I tried to torpedo Skegness or the North Pole more than once while off the Norwegian coast. Eventually I got around to reprogramming 'fire' to Ctrl-Enter.

I seem to recall actually ramming a ship I was looking for in thick fog too. Still if you want to see real stupidity, you should watch people playing IL-2. About the funniest incident I remember was when we were returning from a co-op Taranto raid in Swordfishes (only flyable as a mod, but great fun). As usual, the high jinks started when we had to land on the carrier - in the dark. Someone, I can't remember who, managed to catch a wire ok, so taxied to the front of the ship, switched off his engine, folded his wings and engaged chocks (the planes can tend to move about a bit if you don't). What he hadn't realised was that he'd parked over the catapult, which is fired when 'release chocks' is selected. You can imagine the rest. Accidental keypress, and woosh! Splash! A Swordfish demonstrates that it really doesn't fly very far with folded wings and dead engine... I didn't actually see this as I was still waiting to land, but heard it all on comms. Most entertaining. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

I surfaced a kilometre outside a harbour at night after attacking it with intention of moving external torpedoes and repairing periscope, deck gun . I began this thinking I was safe but I had actually surfaced 100 metres away from a line of on shore pill box style gun en-placements.

After 5 mins , ping ping splash bang, "we are taking damage, man down on deck, medic.."

initial salvo half my crew dead and critical damage through whole of sub, it kind of inevitable that the sub sank not long after.

Good stories, guys! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

My best, non-fatal, error was the first time I departed from Lorient and turned to PORT out of the basin. Again I had not consulted the nav map and didn't know which way to go.

I wondered where the ocean had gone and why the band stopped playing so abruptly. Had to reverse into the Atlantic... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blush.gif

That one I now know I can put down to bunkerratt. I needed that lighthouse! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Running straight into a DD while trying to lock other DD with my stern tubes... sudenly the periscope is under water and a lot of "We have damage" messages flying arround...

Probably shooting the pier under the band then hitting them with a star shell. BIG BOOM!

When I first started, on my very first here's-your-brand-new-from-the-factory-boat mission, I promptly went to the navigator, consulted his charts, saw a dot, then rang ahead full on the telegraph. Needless to say a very short time later, after loud crunch, my boat was no longer factory fresh. It took a few attempts before I discovered that you could actually zoom in on the chart to see things. Wow. Imagine that! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_redface.gif

Thank you very much! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
I didn't kill anyone with the shell or torpedo.

Being rammed by a merchantman I was engaging with the deck gun. I had become so fixated on watching the shells hit that I strayed into its path and was run over. A similar mistake was being too close to a freighter I was pounding with the deck gun. When it exploded, debris killed my watch crew, gun crew and inflicted serious damage to my bridge. I always haul off about 200-300 metres when using the deck gun.

I was new to Lorient Harbour having transferred in.It,s not the easiest harbour to find your way in the dark, which is what fell to me. I was steering just to the right of the lighthouse to reach the river and realised ...too late..I should have been steering to the left of it. Slammed in to the wall at 13 knots...and a big kaboom...end of that short career!

Once I sunk myself with a Falke - don't ask - all hands lost.

And I do remember to leave Kiel for the first time after installing a harbour/locks mod. F12ing around - fascinated by all the new stuff - I made my shortest sortie ever. Just across the bay to beach the boat slowly but effectively.

I've got a new one. Only happened two days ago. Returning to Brest from a successful patrol at 7 kts with x1024 TC. Entering the bay the mouse and keyboard froze and I couldn't get the TC off in time. Rammed the harbour wall at the equivalent of 13,275 kph! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif
