Have been a hardcore il2-fb player for 5 years and thought not much could touch that on full-real (use that term loosely!! )for immersion and tension etc etc..............boy was I wrong!!
Just got this 2 weeks ago and patched it up to 1.4b and GWX, be as well jumping in at the deep end, right?? Wow, amazing is all I can say. Have been lucky and not had to many glitches but have noticed GWX slows things up a bit.
The main problem I have coming from that " greatest ww2 combat flight sim ever" is orientation!! Boy do I get confused!! Look one way and fire my torpedoes off to greenland!!
Think I will persevere and try the mission editor. Its a good thing change sometimes!!

If GWX appears to slow down your game it may be a memory issue. 2 gigs and a decent video card should run the supermod. Try closing down any back ground apps before your fire up SH3, things like A/V etc.

When you have a few minutes your welcome to look through the Community Manual (http://mysh3.info/shiii).

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif Indeed they will. The graphics demands are fairly heavy, but I am getting real decent performance with 2 gigs, and a Nvidia 7600.

Thanks for the tips, running a P4 2.8ghz with 1.5 gig of ram, cant remember the vid card, think its radeon 9200. Yes I know its old but get good graphics on il2 fb with it so am quite happy. Its more an issue of fps, although there not to bad, only when an escort rams me!!!

So you got the sub bug, hook, line and sinker, welcome to the world of subsim's, SH3 is great and with GWX it's even better, ive tried SH4 too, and hopefuly some day SH4 will be a classic, but with all the extra graphics candy SH4 needs extra memory and graphics to run at its full potential, its a good game but the AI engine needs work, mabey in patch 1.3, anyway im enjoying SH3 now and have SH4 on hold, Welcome Captain.

Yup find this a real challange!!! The only comparison that I have is being in my bf109 G6 at low altitude in thick mist and rain at 2am on the mountians map being chased by several P51s with uber night vision (AI)!!!
The learning curve is a bit severe and dont see much in the way of being able to calm things down a bit till I get the hang of it. In il2 you can alter much much more to make it as hard or easy as suits. The principle of attack is the same though, remain unseen,go in fast, hit hard and leave as soon as you can!!!!
At the moment Im seen,go the wrong way, miss and the surface!!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Will persevere though!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif

Welcome to the SH forums christopher65.

Funny, I'm a recent beginner at IL2 and am struggling with spatial awareness (I think I need to get one of those head tracking devices).

Orientation isn't so tough once you get used to cross-referencing your navigation map with your scope view. I guess one thing that will help your learning curve is the fact your U-boat is a hell of a lot slower to manouevre than your BF109, and so too are the enemy ships, which means you've got time to think and double-check what you're doing http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

As for your PC's performance, you may well find that more RAM would be the cheapest way to make a noticeable difference - SH3 (esp. with GWX) is very RAM hungry.

Good luck with it all!

Welcome aboard Christopher! I'm an IL-2 die-hard too... The main thing regarding situational awareness in SHIII is to think of your surroundings in 2D - don't worry so much about the Z-axis, your hydrophone man will take care of that http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

It becomes easy in time to establish your surroundings, using only sound. I've made totally blind strikes successfully using only the hydrophone. Great fun!

A 7600GT runs GWX very well

Coincidences are many... I too have just started with Silent Hunter 3 (with GWX), and have been a long time IL2 flyer.
I find the game to be a real challenge. How do you guys do it? The tactical approach to sea combat is giving me much food for thought.
It might help me speed up (reinforce) the principles and skills need for a torpedo attack on a convoy if their was a video clip of someone setting up (plotting a course for intercept) and plotting a torpedo solution. Is their such a video clip out their?
thanks very much...I really enjoy this game. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

@ christopher65 & zardozid
Welcome aboard! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I too came to SHIII from IL-2FB/PF. I flew online with JG52 The ButcherBirds for many years until my dial-up connection made it impossible. Great times & I miss them dearly. A good squad is like a family. Anyway, when I couldn't fly online any more, that is when I got into SHIII & fell in love with it. One reason I like SHIII so much is that I can also play it at my leisure.

@ VG
Yeah, TrackIR is almost a "must have" to fly. Once I got it, I could never go back to hat views.

Funny thing... Since I've gotten into SHIII, my "sea legs" seem to affected my use of rudder pedals in a plane... Not in a good way! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I agree with Hiriyu, the hydrophone is your best friend. Learn the tricks of using it yourself (don't always trust the operator) & it can serve you well.

Regarding super mods, the memory issue is exactly why I've not "graduated" to one. My game (a heavily modded 1.4b) stutters enough as it is.

P.S. I love the AI in SHIII much more than that in IL-2 where they are impersonal & dead weight in the rear gunner positions. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
