WEll, I know Al Mualim means "the teacher" but I was wondering about Altair.

The manual tells his full name as "son of none"

Actually ibn means "son of" and his fathers name was "none" apparently.

People are saying Altair means eagle or the flying one, but doesn't it mean like airplane or something?

Thumper1980

I wanna know what he says mualim at the end.

dirtybird21
12-09-2007, 01:50 AM
I don't think so, Cause it seemed 2 make him realise something, lol.

stix489
12-09-2007, 01:55 AM
Yeah I know...coz Al-Mualim told him that a student beat the teacher...all surprised! So then Altair responds with Nothing is true, everything is permitted...I think!

Well it makes sense anyway!

dirtybird21

Let me see if I can find a vid of that last convo, then I'll try and translate. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Oh, and some of the guards yell things like:
"Infidel!"
"Oh! You non-believer!"
"You can't escape from me!"
"He is here!"
"Now you will die!"

There are probably some more... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif
But from what I can rememebr. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I just noticed... none of the civilians talk in Arabic. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Maybe that way I can visualise the dialect...]

@ Tela:

I'm willing to bet that Arabic is the hardest language in the world.

There was a scholar that was one of the biggest names in Arabic literature, and he said:

"The Arabic language is so difficult, that even those born with it on their tongues, make mistakes in it."

Another scholar devoted his life to discover the different meanings and uses of the word "ليس" ( "lay-sa", basically meaning "not" ).
And on his death bed, he said:
"أموت و في شيءٌ من ليس"
"I die and there is still more to learn about 'laysa'."

And he spent most of his life studying one basic word in the language... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

That is all part of the long term plan...

And names... well, they will show themselves if they wish...

Wow.

It's a language that must allow for some truly beautiful poetry.

Yeah, so I like poetry. I'm artsy-fartsy coo-coo-pants. Deal with it!

Poetry...

Arabic is considered to be the king of poetry.

There are some really amazing pieces of poetry that you can find...

And even better than the poetry you can find is the Qur'an.
Drool...

Hi everybody! I'm new at this forum...
I've seen you're wondering about the meaning of Altair's name...
I'm studying Arabic, so I think I could satisfy your curiosity.
I read that the full name given to the character is "Altair Ibn La Ahad", then:

Al Tair:
Al is the article "the"; Tair طائِر means "Bird" or also "the flying one" (eagle is called عُقَاب uqab, or نَسْر nasr); so the meaning of the first name is "The Bird" (actually the correct pronounce should be Attair, because the "L" of the article is not pronounced if it's immediately followed by some letters, including this type of "T" which is initial on the word Tair).

Ibn La Ahad:
Ibn is "son"; La is "no": Ahad أَ*َد is "someone", "one".
So the meaning is "son of anyone".

I hope I've helped you!
Bye!

Please... please... READ. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

As a native Arabic speaker I can tell you that most of the things you said are wrong.
Sorry. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

"Altair" has been pronounced differently on many occassions.
Depending on how it's pronounced decides the meaning.

If pronounced as "Al-ta-'ir", then it means "He Who Flies", but if pronounced as "Al-tayr", then it means "The Bird". http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

You are right about the silent "L".
The first name could be either "The Bird", or "He Who Flies", again, depending on the pronounciation.

You are right that there are two meanings for the word "tair", though.

It would be "Son of Anyone", if the "La" did not appear.

But because it is there, it becomes "Son of None".. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

So you were half correct.

When you say "studying Arabic"... do you mean as a second language?
Because I know native speakers of the language that would make such a mistake when talking, when they actually mean that Arabic is there native language. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Hi http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I work in Arabic translation (for TV subtitles), and the final Arabic phrase in the game was bugging me because nobody got it right on any forum.

لا شيء واقع مطلق, بل كلٌ ممكن

The literal translation is:

Nothing is absolute reality. Instead, everything is possible.

I promise this is 100% accurate http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif The comma in Arabic gets switched to a full stop because of differences in continuity methods in each language. The word "Instead" could be disputed to be "However", but "Instead" serves the purpose better.

And now you know.

From English to Arabic, which is more accurate in Arabic:
Nothing is True, Everything is Permitted
لا شيئ *قيقي. كل شيئ مسمو*

(P.S. used a bugmenot account cause I couldn't be bothered to register here)

I have a question about the writing on the wall at the end. I know there's chinese, japanese, hebrew, and arabic up there.

I haven't seen anyone translate the arabic writing up there yet. Anyone have any idea what it says?

It says "Al Zalzalah" which is the name of a chapter from the Holy Quran. It means "The Quake", which recites some of the events which will occur on Judgement Day.
