After an uneventful patrol near freetown I still had most of my fuel and torps, so I decided to take a look at Gibraltar and see if I could get into the med to sink me some nice fat BB.
That was mistake no. 1.
I proceded to plot a course and set off at my usual travelspeed of 11kn (on a IXC). 3000km later and about 50km west of the straits of Gibraltar, doing one of my daily dives, my sonarman starts calling in contacts like he's lost his mind. Three of those warships, of which two are quite far east, the rest merchants. So I creep closer and find a nice fat convoy escorted by a lone destroyer. Being a greedy bastard I immediately notice the T3 leading the convoy and start an attack run.
Mistake no. 2.
My first two torps don't sink him and the destroyer forces me to dive deep and slip away. My greed kicks in and I come up for a final torp on that sturdy tanker.
Mistake no. 3.
I quickly punch in the solution and fire my third torp just to see it explode under a troop transport that had the misfortune of crossing it's path. I'm pissed, but also being pinged by the lone destroyer (or so I thought) so I decide to go back down and take a look around in the free cam.

There are now seven destroyer after me (the seventh was the one taking this picture http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif).

Don't try this at home, kids. You might get hurt.

At about 125 meters depth they lose me, which I credit to my new anti-sonar hullcasing and some fortunate thermal layers.

Crazy as I am I decide to proceed trough the Gibraltar-straits.
Halfway through my navigation map looks like this:

Still, I take the time for some sightseeing. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

But now my Chief Engineer tells me how my battery is down to 25%, so I'll have to recharge. And soon.
Luckily it's just after nightfall and I allready identified a blind spot in the enemies patterns.
So I sneak in there, surface, recharge my batteries and take the external torpedo-reserves inside.

I then proceed to leave again, further east, passing the port of Gibraltar:

I didn't make any more pics and had to go to bed after going about 70km east, since it was 0500 in the morning. The problem is: My battery needs to be recharged again but I still can't surface due to the huge amount of planes patrolling the area.
Wish me luck, I'll need it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

You're a little later in the war than I am. I made it completely through last night in a VIIB, so I had a better underwater range. Unfortunately, there was no German base in the Med yet, so I couldn't resupply in there, and had to leave when fuel went low.

Gawd, do I miss that VIIB boat now. I'm still south of spain and my battery is empty. YET AGAIN. It's like as soon as I dive my crew plugs in every power consuming appliance they can find and turn it all up. In addition to that the IXC does about 0 kn underwater at 1/3 ahead. I have a feeling I'll pay dearly for those few additional torps... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

It's November 17th, 1941 in my game and this is my second patrol on the IXC. I transfered rather late to the 2nd flotilla so I could go for the C version immediatly.
Plus a better Battery (Haw haw haw... very funny) and the absorbant hullplating.

Yeah, the underwater range was the deciding factor in me keeping the VIIB. Well, that plus the fact that in the IX, you keep getting sent off into BFE on patrols.
