If you have a favorite little spot on the PF maps, tell.

I fell in love with a long narrow island east of New Guinea called Normanby. Why I am not sure.

Normanby is almost total jungle, with no open plains rivers cutting out the jungle. The open beach is fairly narrow, allowing the jungle to come fairly close to the ocean. From the air, the Normanby jungle colours, unbroken by open plains rivers, make a strong contrast with the narrow brown beach and deep blue water to provide a stunning sight fading into view on the horizon. The long narrow shape of Normanby is alot of fun, and reminds me of the (much larger) New Britain or New Ireland (wish we had those in PF).

Most important:: For mission or campaign, Normanby can make a good base for a miniature "island hop" where you must fly over ocean to a different island (New Guinea) to the target. Much like Japanese flew over ocean from Rabual to any number of different islands.

I believe it is Palaou (sp?) there are a few spots on the islands were the jungle bleeds into the water. Early morning pontoon zero FMB. I set the start attlitude for 50ft for the "take off" Your last barrel of fuel -take your fighter out of your mangrove hide and attack - you will not return.

Coincidentally, just last night I started searching the maps for a good spot to create Simpson Harbor. I'll probably end up using Port Moresby or Milne Bay, but there are some good bays along the NG coast.

One favorite of mine is Florida-Tulagi, lots of jungle, and small islets and inlets to place AAA and ships offloading. One drawback though is a lack of hills/mountains.

Another is that "hanging genital"-shaped island http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif just off the NW coast of Florida. That's where I put Taratupa, the PT Boat base. Following Leadbottom's orders, Cmdr McHale's boat has been duly shunted off to its own little base away from the rest of the squadron at the base. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif It sucks having to use Italian PT boats, but I couldn't bring myself to whine about it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif

I like Florida Island too. I like the north islets, because it looks "pacific" and if you like short missions its a good looking place to takeoff and fly overwater to a larger landmass (Guadacanal) to target on the far side of Guadacanal. This is all historically "inccorrect" but is a great for creating realistic (not real) missions that you can fly in one hour but still gain altitude before target, even loaded bombers.

oh, and a bump for Normanby Island. All PF simmers should look at Normanby and imagine if we could get a good 1000km map with lots of Simple Normanby style jungle islands.

Niiahu. If you can land on it, you win. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

IMHO, Tarawa looks great. The way the shallow water runs out from the beach and the crushed coral airstrip is just the thing.

Either Port Moresby, Milne Bay or Goodenough Island, all on PNG are my PF favs. Moresby has a big harbour, which joins into the town, which goes to the border of Jackon Aerodrome.

Milne Bay has two nice airstrips, close to jungle on one side, and almost straight into the water on the other side. A while ago I was recreating the entire Battle of Milne Bay (never got it done http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif lol) and the shore is a beautiful spot for defences. A small river bleeds into the land, and on each side of it you can setup endless sandbags, .50cal AAA and artillery pieces which all fire rather well into the bay....and any incoming Japanese ships http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

Goodenough is, well, to put it, good enough. A small/med island with semi mountains, covered in jungle with a large airstrip. Like to recreate 30 Sqn RAAF operations there, flying Beaufighters.
