It sounds like something from 'The Eagle Has Landed' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Eagle_Has_Landed), but I think it's worthy of some thought... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif

Second World War mystery (http://www.bbc.co.uk/insideout/east/series10/week7_second_world_war.shtml)

I didn't see the programme - did anyone here happen to catch it?

The alternative explanation at the end of the article seems more likely - there were many decoy targets used in the UK (and in Germany) to try and fool bombers into dropping their payloads on open countryside.

Here's a related thread on the Google Earth forums, including photos of the mystery barns and a link to view their locations in GE:

If it were a secret German base, I doubt that it would have been so blatantly obvious.
If all of the barns in question were owned by Dutch nationals with ties to Nazi Germany, I'm sure the property was confiscated by the British Government.
I think that all of the lime markings and any Nazi symbols mark it as a training establishment, if not as a bombing range then possibly for commando training.
