Is there a resource that has all the flags of the era? Also, do the Brits have two different flags?

Yes. The Royal Navy flag is white, with the recognized British colors in the upper corner. The Merchant Marine flag is red, instead of white.

Brittish have two flags: the navy flag (white with red cross and union jack in upper corner, and merchant flag red with union jack in the upper corner. Why I do not know, maybe somebody else knows. I read somewhere a thread of someone offering a flag recognition. But most flags except Sovjet Union and Germany are still in use (as far as I know) so it must not be hard to find somewhere a flag manual (bookshop or internet)

I engaged a coastal vessel flying a half orange, half white flag. One top half and the other bottom half. What country is that?

That was most probably red and white and it's from Poland. Funny how they still travel around in the Denmark street in 1940...

I've seen a few Dutch flags as well (but only on armed trawlers).
And a Danish one I think. It was on a coastal merchant I accidentally torpedoed (forgot to check the flag first) and sunk - said neutral unit destroyed. And there's the inverted Japanese flag, red with a white circle in it, which I presume is the German merchant flag.

I've tried to Google for them, and also checked Wikipedia without any luck. Anyone got a link to a page explaining what these flags stand for? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Weeelll, let me enligten you http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

In 1652 the royal navy was organised into 3 squadrens, the white squadron who sported the "white ensign":

the red squadron who used "the red ensign":

and the blue squadron who used (yes you geussed it) "the blue ensign" :

In 1864 the royal navy was reorganised and the White ensign was given to the royal navy, the red ensign to the merchant navy, and the blue ensign was given to the Royal naval Reserve. I don't know if there was any reasoning behind the flag distribution though.

Go here (http://subsim.com/subsim_files/patches.html#sh3) and get the English&Flag Recognition mod...it puts the corresponding flags on the ID-manual.

You can also get a high-resolution flag mod there...puts high-res flags on the ships themselves (looks much clearer at distance).

Here's a link to a resource I found useful:

It would be a nice touch if your spotters / watch crew would just tell you what type of ship and its nationality when they were able to (if it was close enough). Same goes for the weapons officer. He could say "British C2..." and so on.
