I've always loved the looks of the Bf109 series aircraft. It just looks deadly. Maybe it is the squared off canopy? most of the plastic kits I have built have been 109's. I usually have one sitting on my pc. Unfortunately I gave my last one to the neighbor kids.

I find I do better in the planes I like the looks of regardless of performance. Kind of like slipping on an old pair of shoes. Liking the looks of a plane maybe gives you an edge in some way, I don't know.

Anyway, you know my favorite, how about the rest of you?

Well, Spitfire (guess you knew that was coming /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif ). And I like the P-40 (purely for looks). I like the fact that it has a perfect profile for the shark teeth painting.

I agree, I think if you really like a plane`s look it helps in your flying of it!

p.s. I forgot to mention my favourite modern plane is the F16!

As for the IL2 selection of planes? The P-39.
WW2 in general, I'd go for the Spit any time.
Overall, my choice is the SR-71 Blackbird; the meanest looking aircraft ever built.

The most beautiful prop plane is definately the P38 with a nice OD green camoflauge pattern. The design is elegant, graceful and seems to imply the plane can fly forever. To think it was designed back then in an era when there was no fly by wire, no computer modelling and against conventional wisdom is amazing.

The Dora and the TA152 remain my favorite all time planes but the Lightning is simply a beautiful aircraft that inspires the imagination. Can't wait for it to arrive in FB.

It's got to be the P-40 for me as #1. I love the look of the Mig-3 also.
Just as well this isn't about aircraft performance /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I think the P-51,Spitfire & Me-109 are the most beautiful aircraft of WW2.

I really like the looks of the Spit and P-51. I'm not a zealous fan of either (well maybe the spit /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ), but they look sleek and fast and deadly.

I'm a radial guy myself.

For German planes I think the FW series (the D-9 especially) are sophisticated just ooze performance.

P-40 and A6M. No doubt about it. Maybe a 109
G-14 with an IAF skin on it.

I have several favorites, each for one (or more) characteristic. I'll name them (in alphabetical order):

- A-8 Warthog: it's so monstruosly ugly that it becomes wonderful... and what about its BIG gun?

- Bf.109F, G (without bubbles) and K: little dangerous fast nice bastard!

- Eurofighter: I love the "Canard" wings, and that one is the best.

- F-4U Corsair: just looks as its name.

- MC.205 and G.55: they look nice and elegant (and they have weapons!).

- P-40: with a brown camo and a sharkmouth, makes it a deadly-looking guy.

- Tempest: sort of P-40's bigger faster brother.

Besides, I think the ugliest flying stuff are all the "barrel with wings" aircrafts, like *cat serie, Jug, Rata & Co.

Yeah, I got to agree with you. I love the 109s. I build plastic kits also, I am currently working on a i-153 and a 109g-10. I fly mostly the 109g-10 but also all of the 109s.

My favorite is the g-10, the c 205 veltro and the g.55 fiat are beautiful. followed by the spitfire, p-51

BF-109F2/F4 and K4 look very sweet to me. FW-190A series is especailly malevolent looking...

LA-5/7/9 are my favorite looking Soviet aircraft, though the IL-2 is nothing to turn your nose up at!

the 109s definately, especially the e's.The 109 is the most killer looking of all the planes,After that maybe the lightning or the hurricane trop.

Everyone has that favorite plane...

Mine was the bf-109 also for a while.

Now it is mainly the P-47 (bubble canopy) It just seems this, kinda cute, big, fat and friendly fellow. Who can nevertheless, unleash a firestorm on its enemies. It sits there, just being pretty and shining but, it can dive at awesome speeds, destroy anything in its path and yet, it still remains its style.

I'm oscilating between the 109G6(with Erla Canopy, but usual tail), and the Spitfire Vb, with clipped wings.
As for modern. I'd take the F-18C.

well spitfire kind of goes without saying so i'll say......

......the tempest or typhoon - quite big and looks like it means business - especially with it's gaping radiator at the front.

other than that - the lightning was a really advanced and superb looking machine.

i do like the 109 though too- it looks like it means business too - sleek, well engineered and with a sense of purpose to it...

ooo hang on a minute

Allied:

fighters - Lightning & Tempest
medium bomber- B25 - although the A-26 Invader and Mossie look good

Axis

Fighter - Bf109 - Different sub types have different "character"

Medium Bomber - the Ju87 Stuka !!

i didn't bother putting heavies in this list as i don't count them amongst my personal favourites

if i had to have ONE though it would be the tempest

Absolutely! Beautiful design, durable. Could take a lickin' and kept on tickin'. I've seen pics DC-3's so shot up it was amazing that they could fly at all. (Much like the B-17 pics posted a while back).
During the Japanese attacks on China they flew supplies in all weather and combat situations. I saw one pic of a DC-3 that had a DC-2 wing attached. Evidently they had no DC-3 wings so they grafted a DC-2 wing on. Called it a DC2 1/2!
