About 20 assorted ships?

Up until I ran across this, I've always run into lone cargo ships or destroyers out on patrol. I got a sound contact and to my surprise the horizon was filled with ships... The only ones I could see were tankers and cargo ships, but I later learned there were at least 3 destroyers escorting them...

It was unfortunate that the weather was so bad my depth kept going from 5 meters to 15 meters... Darn near impossible to get a solution (100% realism, newbie, etc)... But I did manage to sink a T3 tanker and damage another ship before I had to run and hide from the escorts.... I was spotted after firing my first salvo of 3 torps when my boat suddenly "surfaced" (the waves surfaced me) despite that I had ordered periscope depth...

Yes, actually you have the convoy lanes. If you are sailing arround there for long enought -about 3 weeks, at worst- you'll find a nice, lovely convoy full of ships awaiting your nice torpedoes!

Btw, congratulations! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif Is a really good score! And for a newbie, really outstanding! Anyway, if you try, you can get good solutions via hydrophones, so you can achieve even more tonnage while in stormy weather -you'll be sailing at a depth of 20 meters. Train yourself and you'll discover a new dimension for this game http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Yes it is very normal to encounter convoys, if you are in the right lanes. Escorted convoys were a defensive measure against U-boats, as the war progressed and the merchant losses mounted it came to the point that only very fast ships dared cross alone. These were prewar liners like the QE,QM, Normandie, all of which made 30+ knots i.e. they can outrun your electric torps!! I wonder if these ships are modeled in the game??
In any case, as Jose.Mac said, learning to use the phones is one way to combat bad weather, and there is a soundtrainer mod that has everything you need to get going on that. I think you did very well considering the conditions.
