So, I got my FB Complete DVD in the mail yesterday, and fired it up last night. It's, of course, incredible... but one thing I wasn't prepared for was all the added P-39s!! And a Kingcobra to boot! The last time I played FB there were only the N1, Q1 & Q10. What's the scoop on these new ones? Is the D400 the Iron Dog of choice these days?

IMHO the D2 is the best of the new ones. Doesn't have much ammo for the 20mm though.

Well the new ones gives you a few different things:

P-400 - This is basically the British P-39 version requisitioned for the USAAF. Some P-400s were also in Russian use. Its the easliest version with the least amount of power. A Hispano Mark II cannon in the nose.

P-39D-1 - Similar to the P-400 in armament except with more engine power and bomb attachment options.

P-39D-2 - A strange P-39 actually...it has nearly 1400hp on the engine which is more than all of the other versions. Optionally armed with the 37mm M4 cannon or bombs.

P-63C-5 - The KingCobra which, as you aware, is the successor to the P-39 design. Most King Cobras saw use with the VVS. Its bigger faster, longer range, better armed, and more stable version of the P-39. Its heavier so it handles differently. I think the P-63 is a great tactical fighter in terms of light armor busting, ground attack, convoy destruction, and as an escort fighter for IL-2s. Its very fast at low altitudes and it can compete with FW190s and Bf109s when its down in the weeds. Can outfly them sometimes too.

P400 hands down.Mostly cuz it`s the trickiest to fly but armament is more than enough.

I like any Cobra.

But if I had to pick a favorite, it would be the N1. And that mostly for the view. From the Q1 onwards there is that huge metal plate behind the pilot. While handy for stopping bullets, it really obscures rearward visibility. The N1 seems a little snappier in its flight characteristics and not as prone to overheat as some of the earlier models.

All in all, a nice balance.

Id either say the 400 or the D-1. I dont really care for the large cannons as they tend not to do as much damage as they should (Ive slammed 3 into D-9's and watched them continue to fight). The added Mg armament makes it deadly over longer ranges, and in the ETO and WTO you have a fairly nimble, quick plane. Learn to use those mgs they have and you wont even have to fire that cannon. You can save your cannon rounds for bigger targets such as bombers or when you just feel like watching one of those oh so pritty kills.

Not quite right.

The P-39N-1 has four .30 cal machine guns, two .50cal machine guns, and one 37mm M4 cannon. The P-39Q-1 changes the armament to four .50cal machine guns and the one 37mm. The Q-10 just removes the gondola mounted .50cals and keeps the armament at that.

The Q-1 actually has more firepower than the N-1 despite the reduction in numbers of guns.

my fave is the p400.

yes, more of a challenge, but I like the 20mm more.

Can actually hit something with it. For the life of me I can't hit anything with the 37mm on the others - unless by fluke.

D-2 is the best performer, it has a 1500 hp allison compared to 1200 on other versions, plus I prefer hispano in the nose over M4 - I can't hit squat with that howitzer.

Yeah it is all about the D2 I love it in a '42-43 desert theater. Pretty much outruns 109's and 190's and does some damage close up.

Gotta love the N-1, Its gret for catching messerschmit drivers under 5k, You can sneak up on them and blow them apart before they know you are there

Hi jensenpark,

I'll share a little trick with you for using the 37mm effectively.

This cannon has a lot of loft so when flying wings level you need to be as close to your set convergence as possible before firing. However, if you bank the plane over 45deg or more to fire, I find the odds hitting something go up dramatically. Not sure if it's a quirk in the game or an actual modeled effect, but it works. Try it and see.

I can send you a track if you like.

I like the D-2 the most, and change the cannon to a 20mm if its possible, I can't remember its been a long time since I've flown the Dog http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif But the Q-10 is actually a very underestimated plane in my opinion.

KingCobra is the best, generally I don't like Cobra's because I don't like Russian gunsights, but P63 has a normal one http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
