Lowdown: 1944, August.

I have just changed sub from a IX to a VII
Hardly any renown to upgrade with http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
Sailing from Kiel

Stupid? Sounds it right, but there is a method to my madness.... This is a defunct career I had running - my first in fact! I wanted to try out the Uber-Flak and decide weather to go for it or get a XI in my current GWX career!

I want to try out those... 3 quadrouble 20mm's http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

How long do you all think before I get to "bloody the guns" do you think? Note: My Gunners are standard officers!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/touche.gif

Never EVER try that lol!

I engaged 2 mosquitos and a wellington.

In their FIRST pass I lost my officer of the watch. In their third I lost ALL my gunners! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Even after I recrewed my guns I still had to score a single hit on ANY of them!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

I think I Am having a Type IXB as my next sub lol

Well, air superiority is not exclusive to GWX by far. After I installed War Ace my obsession with Flak guns soon took another turn.
I mean most of the usefull flak upgrade availability are so late to begin with.
The single 20 is about as usefull as a screen door for a U-boat. The dual 20 is ok against a swordfish or maybe a PBY or two. But the fighters & bombers - forget about it. I hit the gass & diiiiiive.

I should mention that I start most carrers in `39 and I have yet to make it through `43 for anything close to uberflak. The secondary flack gun on a VIIB is kinda neat though.

I got my U-Flak configuration in the fall of 1943. It works amazingly against all planes except the carpet-bombing bombers. This is vanilla SH3, by the way. But yes, GWX and WAC surprised me with the unshootable-down planeshttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Ther egoes my grammar http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

There are no "unshootable-down planes"....but you need to load your gunners with promotions and medals to get top performance from them. (One of my gunners shot down 3 Swordfish and a Hudson within 5 minutes North of England, using a single 20mm).
Under air attack while surfaced: steer a zigzag couse at high speed and let your AI gunners (order them to fire on closing aircraft at will) do their job .... IF you must stay surfaced; but the best tactic (and historically so) is DIVE , and live to fight another day.
Even the designed-for-the-purpose flak u-boats had limited success during WW2, and Doenitz quickly had them converted back to standard configuration ... U-Flak was a failed experiment.
(But those quads are fun!) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
