View Full Version : Best Way To Kill A Carrier?

Hi All,

What€s the fastest and/ or most efficient way to sink a carrier.

I tried torpedoes but after I scored three direct hits I figured torpedoes weren€t the best solution because the carrier looked pretty unaffected (how many torpedoes does it take?). I then restarted and flew a B-25 with 3 X 1000lb of bombs and although it didn€t sink the carrier it at least put three large holes in the deck and had her smoking. However I did see online a Hellcat skip bomb what I assume was 2 X 500lb into a carrier and on his second run, with the same load, he actually sunk it.... I don€t think the carrier was damaged before the skip bomb attack but I could be wrong. Is skip bombing more effective or is there a soft spot on a carrier that I should be aiming for?

Thanks for any info.

I haven't experimented much with sinking allied boats, but if you want to take down one of Hirohito's carriers it's tough to go wrong with the Tiny Tim rockets. Go into the Quick Mission Builder, select Coral Sea as your map, the "D" model Corsair as your plane, "Airbase" as your target, and 2x tiny tims plus 8x armor piercing rockets as your armament.

You WILL need to practice with these weapons, however. The Tiny Tim first drops off of your plane and then activates a half-second after doing so. So you not only have to adjust for gravity pulling the rockets down in flight, but the fact that they drop several meters off your plane, as well. Once you get used to them, though, a solid hit with both Tiny Tim rockets will instantly sink Japanese carriers in most cases. The 8 AP rockets can come in handy for finishing the boat off if only one TT hit, or destroying any fighters on the deck that survived the blast.

you need a total bomblaod of 2000kg/4000lb to sink a FleetCarrier , in whatever combination

Take a He-111H-6 loaded with 2xSC2000 with a bomb delay of 4 secs or so.

Then skim the waves to yer carrier, and line up so you are coming from Bow to Stern, or vice versa, and skip bomb the thing. You'll sink it every time guaranteed.

B-25 with 3x1000lbers work well too, but you don't always get it first time.

I skip bombed the saratoga with two 1000lb bombs with the F4U-1D Corsair. Destroyed it immediately. Skip Bombin is the far best way to destroy a carrier IMO

in my mission 'action at midway' which i played today, the Akagi took a 1000kg bomb aboard which left a smoking hole in the deck and it had a good list as well as being well down at the stern, but it continued. later it also took 3 torps from a US submarine and there was no change.... (i'd always assumed that sub torps were more powerful than plane or ship launched ones) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

reminds me of a joke that went around when i was in the army at the time of the falklands war.... soldier goes sick.... says to doctor " i think i've got Hermes.".... doc says "don't you mean Herpes?".... "no, I'm a carrier"

An F4U loaded with 2 1000lbs and 1 2000lbl bombs will take out a light Jap. carrier if you suicide attack it. Good for online play haha.

Because I have a 4 sec delay when I skip bomb, and coz the bombs are so big, ANY aircraft that is chasing me, or within 200m of the blast or thereabouts is gonna die!!

I have gotten a few kills this way, and it's a mighty fine way to shake an attacker, hehe.

Lol Jambock__01, did you even skip those bombs .. looks like special delivery straight into the side of the carrier. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Ah a four second delay.... that€s what I€ve been missing when using those monster bombs at close range http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.... last time I dropped a sixteen hundred pounder from an SBD-5 I was a little too close to the target and it not only took me and the carrier out but the 109 that was chasseing me as well hehe.

Ok thanks a lot guys I tried most of the suggestions here and they are all great tactics. Skip bombing does work great but I find I get shot up a lot and sometimes I barely make it through to the carrier. Although it€s the most fun technique it€s also the most dangerous.... well for me anyway. However the Corsair with the bomb load suggested above (1 X 2000lb + 2 X 1000lb) is the best and most efficient way to sink a carrier. It€s a sure fire one shot kill with minimum risk to your self and will sink any carrier in the game. I just dive in and release all of the bombs in one drop and if all three hit the target then that€s 4000lbs of explosives that no carrier in the game can with stand. I have tried it with the F4U-1C/1D and it works perfectly.

Thanks a lot all.

I call it the 'rope-a-dope' trick. It's just great when it works and the enemy fighter chasing you crashes and has absolutely no idea what has just happened to him. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif
