View Full Version : more realistic tracer distribution

Does anyone else feel that the tracer distribution for the 50 cal needs to be changed? It gets kind of old when you see all the tracers come out in groups all at the same time. I have noticed that the 7.92 MGs have had the tracer flow changed twice in the last two patches. In 3.03 they came out in a burst of a few then none and then a burst again. It looked really good. Then in 3.04 they were changed again to a more randomized flow which looks great also. I was wondering why the 50 cal has been ignored in this manner and for that matter so has the 20mm Hispano and even the German cannon. It seems that all the tracers from them all come out at the same time from every gun. What I would really like to see is a kind of utility where we can determine where the tracers and other ammo types are placed in each belt. It adds another dimension to the sim that we as pilots would actually have a "say" in how and where the tracers are placed and in which guns and this would greatly enhance the immersion. I know that other people out there think that there are more impotant things to worry about but this is important to me and I'm sure others as well. I wonder how hard it would be for Oleg to implement something like this and if not now maybe incorporate it in BoB. I just think that all the tracers coming out at the exact same time from every gun is a little unrealistic.

Actually not...it got synced up around 1.22 or so. Definately starting in AEP it got like that.

Back in 1.0 and 1.01 when the .50cal was as useful as a .30cal (maybe less so) it was a totally unsyncronized thing. Sort of like the Spitfire IXe is like now.

I'm not the only one thinking the same thing as Choctaw http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I only beat you by a week or two when I posted my friend.

Check out the thread I started on the very same subject here:

http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=400102&f=63110913&m=4061082362

So, basically I agree with you, would be a nice little feature that added realism to the sim, and allowed the player to better see his bullet stream. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I posted that also a few months ago..

I even made some photoshop work to try to "show" how it might look like:

hopefully it gets changed http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Very nice TooCool http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif That's exactly what I was picturing for PF. Definately gives the pilot a better idea of his bullet stream, and looks impressive to boot http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I like the way you can still actually see them after they travel for a while. I do not like the fact that after you shoot the 50s now you can only them for a few yards. I have fired countless thousands of rounds out of the 50 when I was in the military and you can see them brightly all the way till they burn out at 1,800 meters. There is no "looking" for them and where they are going because they are like beacons shining day or night. Of coarse you can see them more brightly at night but they are still bright during the day. I have a picture of me actually lighting one off back last summer in the middle of a bright sunny day. Check out how bright it is!!!!http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/PublicPhotoAccount2/50Cal.bmp

Not sure where you are getting that from Icefire, but tracers have alwayse been syncronized. Until the implementation of the Mustang with its .50's on two seperate triggers ('cannon' and 'mg' triggers have alwayse been out of sync, of course), which gives a reasonable illusion.

Though I don't think Oleg's ever stated it, I believe the tracers are synced, such as they are, for the same reason we cannot adjust (in-game) ammunition belts: the reason being frames-per-second and/or online bandwidth. Its a compromise. I'd like to see it improved too, but as often as its been asked for in the past I don't see it happening this side of the next sim.

I do hope that you mean the Thunderbolt and NOT the Mustang with two seperate triggers for the .50s. When flying the P-51 ever recall having to pull two triggers to fire those big old Brownings but the twin trigger setup is one of my favourite things about the Jug.

As far as i can remember I think that tracers were unsynched at some point, though i'm not exactly sure of where they switched. For sure with the shvak. It essentially just a minor graphical issue anyway. The tracers do what they are supposed to do: provide a sighting guide when you fire.

What i would prefer to see is an option to turn tracers off. I hate it when half **** a pass and give away my position. Turning tracers off wouldn't help the dogfighting crowd so much but I would be apples for me in my Jug.

Wer'nt pilots taught to not rely on tracers as a means of accuracy? If your watching the tracers your not watching the attitude of your target but I guess making them more realisitic is a good thing.
