Ive begun my first career entirely reling on SH commander to dole out a retirement. Previously i just rolled a 6 sider and abided by the results. But Id love to have a report on my retired skippers. Im in base before patrol 7 and am beginning to wonder... is a add on to the career file? A pop up when u launch sh commander? Kalun? I know youve had a few careers retire after patrol 4.. how does ot work?

I haven't had it happen to me with the new releases, but I've had it happen to me before. There was a little pop up saying your captain was retired. You could then go to the profile for the captain and view what happened to him after the war.

I think it works along the same "random die roll" that Beeryus put in the readme file. After the 4th patrol, the program probably rolls a random die and if the results equals a retire, you're retired.

It begins the randomization with patrol 4. If you open SH3 Cmdr, open the box, "SH3 Options." Pause your mouse pointer over the line, "Simulate a realistic career." It will display the formula used.

My understanding is that it begins this process every time you use it to start the game, after patrol 3. I only use SH3 Cmdr to start the game when I am in port, before going out on patrol. If I am going to resume a saved patrol midway, I use the normal game shortcut. If you like to use SH3 Cmdr to always start the game, uncheck that option when you are already at sea.

I had two careers in a row ended after 4 patrols. My current career is on patrol 7, so I'm expecting the retirement hook any day now. It adds a nice twist to the game, knowing that at any minute you could be retired, so you try to squeeze every ton possible while on a patrol.

Assuming that the "realistic career length" option is selected, the randomisation occurs every time "Launch SH3!" is pressed, regardless of the patrol number. However, current rules dictate that no retirement will occur until after patrol 4.

You must have missed one of the biggest selling points of release 2.2! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Release 2.2 (and onwards) recognises mid-patrol careers and flags them accordingly. When you press "Launch SH3!" with these careers the realistic retirement and crew transfer options are automatically ignored. You can now, and I recommend it, use SH3Cmdr to start SH3 *every* time.

In fact, you actually gain the biggest benefit from starting mid-patrol careers via SH3Cmdr. You will most likely get new random ship skins, tonnage values and Destroyer hunt times which will add a touch of variety to your patrols.

Cool! Good to know! I'll update that info in my mental database.

Another question, is it in the current version or a future version that medals and promotions awarded via SH3 Cmdr will be recognized in-game?

Never mind, I found the answer in the readme file:

A common question raised through forums has been "will my Crew Manager changes be recognised within Silent Hunter III?". To answer this question:
-awarding *any* qualifications to officers impacts compartment efficiency as if they were awarded via Silent Hunter III;
-awarding the *first* qualification to a Chief Warrant Officer impacts compartment efficiency as if awarded via Silent Hunter III;
-awarding subsequent qualifications to a Chief Warrant Officer, whilst being recognised in Silent Hunter III, has no effect in Silent Hunter III;
-awarding a qualification to a Petty Officer impacts compartment efficiency as if awarded via Silent Hunter III;
-awarding a qualification to a seamen, whilst being recognised in Silent Hunter III, has no effect in Silent Hunter III;
-awarding any medal or badge has the same effect as if awarded via Silent Hunter III;
-promoting/demoting has the same effect as if awarded via Silent Hunter III (although there is no demotion via Silent Hunter III);

So, only qualifications awarded to seamen or extra qualifications awarded to Chief Warrant Officers are, despite being recognised in the game, not effective in the game.

Actually, these questions and more can be answered by reading the "breathing" SH3 Commander FAQ available at http://www.subsim.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=421828#421828
