With such a broad range that the IL2 series has you can fly and fight on almost any front in WWII

West. Sadly, +90% of servers concentrate on post war late war deathmatch or at least west front, instead of my favourite, the east front.

I agree. Hyperlobby needs more full-switch (or almost full switch) eastern front servers. Skilled Russian pilots are few and far between these days.

I put the one I LIKE to fly the most, not the one I actually fly the most.

I like europe western front, but only early war up to 41-42.

I dislike all late war planesets, but I don't really have much choice if I want to fly online...

ETO is boring, and after eight years I've had enough Ost too. PTO and Afrika are my preferences.

ETO and MTO for me. Not particularly fussed whether it's a late or early war scenario. Used to fly the eastern front stuff a while back but got bored with it.

I voted Europa Eastern and Western Front.

I think the Eastern Front is by far the most suitable for simulation because of its tactical nature, short flight times and low altitudes.

The lack of proper maps has somewhat distracted me in Western front scenarios in IL-2, though some can be created fairly well, like Battle of France, N-Africa and post D-Day battles.

Anyway, I can certainly enjoy flying in any theater and have no strong prefernces in this regard.

I like all of them!
Little bit jaded flying Eastern front though, too many years in online wars.

Western Front + Africa, before that it was Eastern Front, never was too fond of Pacific.

To tell the truth I'm geting properly fed up with ww2 overall, Korea or maybe even better Vietnam would be something I would really enjoy...

Right now it's mostly the Pacific, for various reasons. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif The Western front is still fun, but it's definitely been done to death.

As with Brain, I really wouldn't mind a Korea sim right now, and I'm really looking forwards to RoF.

Eastern Europe northern and southern fronts are what I fly most. I really like the Leningrad, Stalingrad, and Crimea maps.

I also like the Berlin and Normandy maps for western front action, but they kill my frame rates because the CPU can't keep up. I never got as excited about the PTO in this sim, it lacks the depth that the ETO had.

I fly in all theaters of operation.

but would elect the war in the pacific if my favorite Japanese rides where flyable (B5N/B6N). http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/disagree.gif

WWII http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Seriously I'll fly anything and anytime that IL2 models. I'm not fanatical about it being 100% historical, sometimes I just want to have fun.

But I fear IL2 will gather a lot of dust when Rise Of Flight comes out, WWI is my favourite theatre http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Funny how Western front leads easily.

And yet most posters don't really fly it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

I like Pacific most. I have no idea why.....

Maybe I got burned out on the eastern front playing original IL-2 and when I finally got 1946, I liked something different maybe.

Well there have been more votes than replies in this thread.

Personally, I'm just sick of the 1944 Spit/P47/P51 vs 109/190 matchup. I don't know how the Warclouds guys do it 24/7

Been trying some challenges using the 4.09 Slovak & MTO maps most recently. Any heard of much with the Manchuria maps?

I fly them all, but I prefer Ost front and Asia/Pacific early scenarios, or, the air war in China, as that was mostly fought with obsolete aircraft on both sides.

I find late war aircraft to be exceedingly boring, but if I want to fly online I am usually forced into them.

I like diversity and fly anything. . .but I just love flying – gliders, helicopters, aerobatics, Lock On, BlackShark, Condor, FSX, X-Plane, VATSIM, jets, kites, bird watching – whatever. Early on this personality quirk of mine helped to influence the TX-OC3 map cycles such that they incorporated a fairly wide range of maps, times, weather conditions, ground objectives and other things that might challenge someone beyond just having a dogfight. Back in the olden days people really seemed to appreciate this.

Some newer folks might not know that we were the first to host 3rd party dedicated server, and the first to incorporate a scripting system to allow for these map cycles and that was over 7 years ago now! Back then things were quite different then they are today.

After a while, as our servers had larger and larger map rotations, and as people became more fixated on their super sleds, people would often jumped ship or whine if they couldn't fly the same planeset as the last map, or if it was to early or late in the day, or if it was breezy. :-P

The fact is that quite a few online players need their one late war sled, on their favorite map, at 12:00, and without it, they bail.

Things like this made it difficult to keep these servers populated this is true even for some servers that had been the longest running, highest quality and had the fastest connections available.

I'm taking a rough guess, but it seemed to change around the time that AEP came out – early war stuff became blasé.The thing people really wanted was a consistent meeting place of the same folks, with the same theater, under almost identical conditions day in and day out. It seems there just aren't enough people on any given night to keep a full house. Look at most servers with 30 people in them - and you see an extremely limited map list, most missions are at high noon, weather conditions are always perfect, it's almost always late war. . .

You can't really argue with supply and demand!

I fly all fronts, but shy away from flying anything Japanese or Soviet save the Zero and IL-2 respectively. I like to be able to read my guages.

I fly all of them, but I am a bit worn out on the whole "late war wonderplanes" thing.

To be honest, I havent flown online at all since I upgraded my PC to Vista. I got kind of tired of seeing the same stuff all the time, I usually just wound up flying over on Zekes most of the time (still a good server).

I have been flying campaigns offline in planes I really didnt know much about. The Italian birds for example, are a lot of fun. As was the Romanian IAR, that was a pleasant surprise.

I fly all fronts, though I might focus on one specifically for a month and then move on to another one, I always have campaigns going in most theaters. Currently, I've been on an Eastern Front kick, equal parts VVS and Luftwaffe.

It's kind of logical that the type of player that gets their kicks from going online and racking up kill points for boast value is not going to be that interested in varied maps and plane selections.

Its also significant that a lot of the more experienced players (if online at all these days) are now only found in co-ops and online wars so dogfight servers tend to get a fair share of new players and without a doubt the newer planes are easier to get kills with even for a beginner.

Hence a tendency to big flat open summer maps at midday with a latewar planeset, and the last time I played online no jets.

To be honest the most fun I ever had online was a whacky full switch server with an early war eastern front planeset where you spawned at night in a thunderstorm across a bay from the enemy base. Full switch online at night in a thunderstorm is outragous fun a total rort.

Almost 100% eastern front using the EnjoyR's "Drang Nacht Osten" fighter and jabo campaigns. Also, in a separate installation, EnjoyR's "Disaster in the Frontiers" fighter and sturmovik campaigns.

Now entering novemeber 1941 for both sides. So far, getting as many kills as possible and making the cleanest landing possible are practically my only concerns for the German side. For the Russian side, well, simply surviving the mission is of regularly grave concern! I've lost count on how many times my poor Russian pilots have died, but some 40 missions in, my German figter pilot has yet to be killed or MIA (he was shot down twice, both times by flak, but glided into friendly territory), and the jabo pilot has been killed only once - a direct hit from flak. It was the disconcertingly instant black screen of death!

Of course, this is only in late 1941, and we all know how much things change later on...

A note on EnjoyR's Drang Nacht Osten campaigns: they seem to be extremely well-researched and orchestrated campaigns. Many of the "mini-campaigns" that took place on the eastern front are well represented here, and the player gets plenty of participation in them. Particularly the static campaign around the Rhzev salient once it gets established. At first I wondered why my squadrons were spending so much time around Rhzev, mission after mission. Then I read about it and found out just how much of a world war I style campaign the Rhzev battles really were. If I remember correctly, there was continuous brutal fighting throughout that salient for almost two full years, but the lines barely moved. The salient was established and fortified in late 1941, and it didn't capitulate until after the battle of Kursk. In between, the Russians continuously assaulted the defenses there, at exceedingly horrifying costs.

No one really knows how many souls perished at Rhzev, but some estimate figures go into the millions.

Ya know what i have YET to fly the newest maps in 4.09. it's driving me crazy. I have 4.08 on C drive so i can fly on WarClouds....and 4.09 installed when it came out but nver botherd with it since....no for some funny reason that "one file every one uses for conveinace and has used since the old il-2. you know the one i'm talking about." isn't working in the 4.09 install. So i can't fly the slovak map becuse i can't find my disk. case is right here. no damn disk. grrrrr

group sugestions????
Delete the 4.09 and copy the for 4.08 and patch?

I'd prefer the PTO land based island hoping more than anything except the CBI from india to china. but since the PTO was never Finshed and we can't doa CBI or Philipeans....i'm stuck in the rut that is the ETO West front online. no hacker free severs runing anything mid war pto. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

The new Bessarabia is a great mission building map big wide airfields some nice larger cities and relatively flat ... but it tends to get overlooked because of the sheer visual impact of the awesome scenery in Slovakia.

From a gameplay point of view, flying a dogfight in Slovakia with an early war or pre-plane that cannot just zoom climb out of trouble when a mountain looms up is great fun. It can be tricky to mission build however as the AI does not cope at all well with that density of mountains and tends to CFIT.

I find that most of the add-on Dgen campaigns, whether free or pay, are a way better then the ones that came with IL-2 1946.

Recently I've been playing some of the campaigns from the Ostfront add-on, and I'm having a blast. I've been slowly working through a Strumovik campaign on the Kurland map, and it's been a crazy experience. Another is the Fw190A8 campaign on the same map. That one is really testing the limits of my ability to fly the 190. The last mission I did was a escort for a recce plane, just me and a wingman, weather was rain and it was early morning. We got jumped by Yak-9s, and I managed to take three down before making a run back to base. I'm getting ready to land when my wingman says he's hit and bailing out. We got followed back to base by a pair of Yak-9s. I got hits on one, but I was just too low on everything, including altitude to press the attack, so I landed. I was lucky, they didn't press their attack, they must have been out of ammo. A crazy mission, and lots of fun.
