Between friends who fly in IL2, the question is: which is the Max resolution recommended for fly IL2 in each monitor.
Please, we needed your advice:
1) 17" 1024x768 or another resolution?
2) 19" What is Max resolution?
3) 21" What is Max resolution?

Best Regards!

It depends on many factors.

Il2 is written with 1024*768 in mind. A CRT monitor has differnt dot pitch size supporting differnet max resulutions. Max resolution supported on a monitor might not be as sharp as a lower.

Then you need a card that display the different resolutions optimal.

suggestion for max:

17 - 1024*768 (1152*864)
19 - 1280*960
21 - 1600*1200

It really depends on the monitor, are they CRT's or TFT's?

With TFT's games look better in the monitors default resolution. I have it displaying at 1200x1024 (although I have a think black line at the top and bottom of the screen as thats what it looks best in for my TFT. Others are different so specifying the monitor is a great help.

1200x1024, or 1280x1024?

Anyway, at least the newest version of IL-2 Stab (http://www.users.on.net/%7Emjtm/IL-2/) allows you to use most resolutions without the said black lines.

Are you sure about that ^ ?

I have just invested into an NVidia 6600GT, my native TFT resolutions is 1280 x 1024, I have those black (unused) lines no matter how I played with manually with conf.ini, and a quick search on this subject revealed that in this specific case, nothing can be done.

I wouldn't mind the black lines on the top and bottom, but when I turn on the mirror in an F4F-4, it produces a very annoying picture (part of the mirror) on the lower left corner of the screen, in the previously unused part, very very distracting....

This seems to be an unsolvable problem, but if you are confident that IL-2 Stab can solve similar problems, I'll give it a go.

I meant 1280 and thanks for the tip. I have the old IL2Stab but I'll try this new one. Cheers.

I use 1920x1440 with my 21'' CRT monitor both for gaming and general use.
I haven't tried 2048x1536 for gaming.

The thing to know about resolution is the greater doesn't always mean better.

Before I moved to a 52" HDTV (1920x1080), I was using 19" LCD which the manufacturer suggested 1280x1024. The picture looked great with IL-2, but during Online Wars, I would always see the enemy a tad later than everyone else - because the dots are smaller.

Ofcourse with a 52" sitting 8 feet away, that is no longer an issue - I'm spotting bandits 3km - 5km out! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Since you can't set the 1280 x 1024 resolution from setup.exe or game you need to do it in conf.ini:
[window]
width=1280
height=1024
.
.
SaveAspect=0 *** removes top & bottom "bands" ***

lol, thanks Neo, i found the problem

I experimented with that setting (SaveAspect=0) already, but I only started the game and went through the menus. Everywhere, you can see the unused areas. That's why I thought the parameter is not working for me.

But I wanted to post an evidence screenshot with the annoying mirror in the lower left corner and your setting, so this time I actually pressed "Fly" and voila, the black / unused areas disappared from top and bottom. I also checked that it's not stretching, it is filled with new visible area. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/metal.gif

The misleading black margins come back again when returning to the menues, but who cares now...! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
