I€ve recently bought some second hand books and one of them was €˜Hawker Aircraft since 1920€ By Francis K.Mason. In side I found this€¦

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v187/Secudus/AircraftImages01/HurriFake.jpg

'Nice picture' I thought... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif But then I looked at the Canopy... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

When did they put Bubble Canopies on Hurri€s then, cause it does'nt say they did in the book... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

There, is that better... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Me doesn't thin so!

Well I thought it was a Spit, but the tail plane looks more like a Hurricanes and so does the rest when you start looking...

Is it testing the canopy used on the Typhoon and Tempest?
It has anti-glare panels for night flying.
It also looks like it does not have cannons in the wing.
I know they once planned to give the Hurricane a bubble canopy but I have never heard of it done.
Does anyone know what the code US-X?
If it a code used by Hawker it might be genuine.
The roundels and tail fin flash look very early, too early for a testbed for the Typhoon.
I think its a fake.

I would like to say photoshop, cause that canopy dosn´t look right. The bottom line looks so jagged and the headrest...dosen´t just look right either,so ....nice try though,as they usually say http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

You wouldn't dare...would you.

If it isn't photoshopped.
There was a site posted a while ago with drawings of that 'variant'.
It was posted by Woofiedog (I think). He should be around soon....

Doesn't this picture look a bit strange though? Bubble canopy (site link below picture)?

Photoshoped, garanteed! Sorry, no such Hurricane existed. At best a retouched photo (as it was called in those days).

A Hurricane like this would surely have been more well known and tested as a prototype, this one has operational markings.

Fake.

Note the upper fuselage behind the cockpit curves downward slightly towards the tail. Also, you can see where he has copied the treeline to fill in where the real fuselage used to be:

Very good stuff though. Had to look close to spot it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

It seems that 'US-X' is a fairly famous Hurricane too.. flown by WC Geoffrey Page of 56 Sq. in BoB...and used on the BoBMF's Hurricane? (not sure about that one)

EDIT - oh no, that was US-C, P2970 is painted as US-X and is in Canada.

I would say that it's a photo shop fake! If not, maybe a photo mock up to show what the plane will look like if modification was to be carried out?

What does... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

The canopy was from a Tempest and suitably streched and the seat was from a Spit... The rest was free hand... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Looks cool. But bubble canopies were slower since they created a low pressure area right behind the canopy (that is no longer filled in by a razor back).

The already slow Hurricane would not do well with such a setup.

Don't listen to these fuddie duddies ARCHIE. Keep up the good work. The picture had me intrigued and it was a nice puzzle trying to spot the photoshopped bits and figure out what had come from where.

I was going to ask you to post the original photo for comparison, but you've kindly already done so.

The first 2 were, early on.

The P-51D was slower than the Razorback versions. Ditto the P-47. And both had stability issues caused by the loss of side area (later addressed by an added fin fillet).

They went that way (and the 262 was designed that way) because being able to see behind you is more important than a few kph, particularly when you can address it by adding more power/thrust.

Look at Dago Red or Strega or Voodoo.
http://www.dagored-airracing.com/wallpaper/009_640.jpg
http://www.strega.com/graphics/strega_r01_02.jpg
http://valleyofspeed.com/Catalog/Reno_99_8bit/images/Voodoo.jpg

They not only chopped the top, as hot rodders are wont to do, they also filled in the area behind the canopy, in effect, turning a D into a C almost.

A plane like the Hurricane was just too slow and would suffer excessively from being made into a bubbletop.

It's a not-so-well-done retouched photo. It gets a bit too blurry where the spine behind the canopy would be, and the treeline repeats itself between the back of the canopy and the front of the tailfin.

Besides, the canopy itself just looks plain fake.

What "Book" did he get this from? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif
